Catcher Tom Murphy (Oneonta 2010) of the Tri-City Dust Devils has been tapped by Baseball America as the fifth-best professional prospect in the Northwest League. The Dust Devils are the short season Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. The full Northwest League prospect list can be found here.

Murphy was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the third round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft after a standout three-year career at the University at Buffalo. Murphy was the 2011 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and as a senior this past spring, he set a school single-season record with 13 home runs.

The West Monroe, N.Y., native appeared in 55 games for Tri-City. He compiled a .288 batting average, six home runs and 38 runs batted in. Murphy averaged over a hit per game with 61 total hits in 55 contests. Over one-third of Murphy’s 61 hits were extra-base hits – 13 doubles, three triples and six home runs. The Tri-City backstop finished the regular season tied for seventh in the Northwest League in slugging percentage (.462).

Murphy played for the Oneonta Outlaws in 2010. He was the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game. The UB product hit .287 for the Outlaws with three home runs and 19 RBI. Murphy was selected by league coaches and general managers as the top prospect on the 2010 Oneonta team and was ranked 13th among all New York Collegiate Baseball League prospects. Last summer, the former Outlaw, as a member of the Holyoke Blue Sox, took home the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Top Prospect prize.
