Recap - Pilots win big over DiamondDawgs

With a 7-2 victory over the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (22-17) at Colburn Park on Saturday night, the Newark Pilots (21-19) hold onto the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s fourth seed as the end of the regular season draws closer.

The Pilots remain one game behind Glens Falls, but are now one and one-half games above the Oneonta Outlaws for the final playoff spot with eight games left in the regular season.

Left fielder Austin Logan (UC Davis) excelled at the plate, starting in the outfield in place of the injured Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher), who will miss the remainder of the season after a collision with second baseman Josh Perez (Mississippi College) in Friday’s loss to Amsterdam. Logan paced the Pilots with three hits and four RBIs.

After Newark took a 2-1 advantage on a bases-loaded walk, Logan slapped a two-run single through the right side to extend the lead to 4-1, chasing Mohawk Valley starter Joe Michaud (Bryant) out of the game. Michaud dropped to 5-2 on the season after giving up four runs on six hits and four walks in just three and one-third innings. He did fan a game-high five batters.

Logan batted in another run in the eighth as he and Brent Langston (Delta State) each earned RBI singles in the frame, giving Newark the 7-2 lead.

Cullen Babin (Delta State) allowed just one earned run in six inning of work for the Pilots. Austin McAuliffe (NJIT) and Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) combined for three scoreless innings in relief. Babin and Scott each struck out three.

The DiamondDawgs were led offensively by Jack Morrow (Young Harris), who hit a solo homerun to lead off the top half of the fourth, and Eddie Sorondo (Delaware State), who finished 3-for-4.

With two RBIs on the night, Langston regained the league lead with 40 on the season, one more than Mohawk Valley’s Eric Helmrich (Marist).

The Pilots hit the road on Sunday, July 22 to face the Watertown Wizards at 5 p.m. The DiamondDawgs visit the Amsterdam Mohawks for a 7:05 p.m. contest.
