Recap - Outlaws earn 10-inning win over Hawkeyes on Zac Johnson walk-off

The Oneonta Outlaws continued their battle for the Mayor’s Cup against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes with a hard-fought contest at Damaschke Field on Thursday night. The game featured extra inning excitement as the as Zac Johnson (Illinois State) knocked a two run single to right field to lead the Outlaws to a 3-2 victory.

The Cooperstown Hawkeyes, in a briskly moving game, held a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning when pinch-hitter Zander Wiel (Vanderbilt) lobbed a single to left to score Clay Holcomb (Troy) to tie the game. The Hawkeyes returned the favor in the top of the tenth when Patrick Hyde (Northern Kentucky) singled to left and was aided by a fielding error that allowed Quinn Pippin (Tulane) to score from first base.

In the bottom of the tenth inning the first two Outlaws flew out with the next three batters picking up two walks, and a hits batsman, Johnson then stepped up with bases loaded two out to make his game winning shot, knocking in Omar Garcia (State College of Florida) and Orlando Rivera (State College of Florida).

Cooperstown’s first run came in the third when lead-off hitter Bobby Guerra (Manhattanville) earned a win and then moved up two bases on a wild pitch. Allowing Hyde to pick up the RBI sacrificed fly to left field.

Both teams received excellent pitching from their starters, as Brett Lisle (University of Virginia) of Oneonta allowed one run off four hits through eight innings, but did not pick up the decision. Christopher Haggarty (Villanova) for Cooperstown allowed one run off four hits in eight complete innings and also was shut out of decision. Relief pitcher Jeremy Rhoades (Illinois) picked up his first run on the 2012 season while Coleman Barron (Davidson College) would charge with the loss.

Line score for the evening was Cooperstown 2 runs, 7 hits and no errors, and Oneonta 3 runs, 5 hits and 1 error, in 2:23.

The Outlaws return to Damaschke Field Saturday evening in a contest against the Elmira Pioneers. Game start time is 7:00pm.
