Recap - Dutchmen cage Golden Eagles at Bellizzi Field

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles made the trip to Bellizzi Field on Saturday to face off with the host Albany Dutchmen. Albany got ahead early and held on to the lead late to beat Glens Falls 6-5.

Albany starter Blake Smith (Morehead State) ran into a bit of early trouble as he gave up one in the top of the first inning, but he settled in nicely to provide the Dutchmen with a nice start. He only allowed three hits over his six innings of work, while striking out two and allowing that sole run in the first. He improved his record to 1-1.

The game-changing moment came after Nolan Gaige (UAlbany) legged out an infield single in the second inning to load the bases with two outs. Jack Wietlispach (Parkland) came to the plate and cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double down the left field line. Wietlispach's hit captured a lead for the Dutchmen that they would never relinquish.

The bullpen was able to hold onto the lead as four pitchers combined to preserve the lead in the final three innings. Ricky Schafer (Cypress) came on to close the door with a perfect ninth, as he struck out designated hitter Mike Vigliarolo (Saint Louis) to end the game. It was Schafer's third save of the season.

The Dutchmen certainly didn't play a perfect game as they won despite committing five errors in the field. Smith and the bullpen were able to work around the errors to ensure that the Albany fans went home happy.

For Glens Falls, Neil Fryer (Siena) took the loss as he drops to 0-2 on the season. He gave up five runs in just over two innings, with the big blow being the double by Wietlispach.

The Golden Eagles were led at the plate by Ross Kivett (Kansas State) who had a big 2-RBI hit to cut the lead to one late. Glens Falls just fell short after Kivett's hit to ultimately lose the game.

Albany has an off day then travels on the road to Oneonta on Monday.
