Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers were poised to snap their four game losing streak against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles on Wednesday night at Dunn Field. A packed crowd and former NASA Astronaut Eileen Collins saw the Elmira Pioneers explode for nine runs in the first three innings en route to a 9-4 victory.
Matt Holling (Hofstra) toed the hill for Elmira as they faced the Golden Eagles at home for the first time in 2012. Holling would work in and out of trouble in the first inning as Glens Falls would place runners on second and third. Holling would pick up two strikeouts to end the inning and turn things over to an eager Pioneers offense.
Elmira would take the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kendall Konopka (Arizona Christian) would score on a passed ball to make it 1-0. Zac Bellinger (VCU) would continue his recent offensive surge as he drove a ball down the left field line as it would roll around for his 14th double of the season making it a 3-0 Pioneers lead. Elmira overall would plate four runs in the innning on three base hits.
Landon Prentiss (VCU) would lead all Pioneers batters on the night as he would tally his third hit of the night in the third inning as he would clear the bases for Elmira with a three RBI double and adding to the lead to make it 9-0. The nine runs would be plenty for Elmira as Holling was in control through the middle innings. Holling retired eight consecutive Golden Eagle batters at one point as he pitched seven scoreless innings while scattering four hits and eight strikeouts.
Glens Falls would put some runs on the board against Lee Gilliam (UNC Greensboro) in the eighth inning. Mike Vigliarolo (Saint Louis) would drive in two runners with the bases loaded to cap off a four run inning for the Golden Eagles. Glens Falls stringed together four singles in the inning of Gilliam who would eventually would out of the game with Elmira on top 9-4. James Yacabonis (St. Joe’s) would close things out for Elmira as he would get the final out at second base after an Elmira error tempted Ross Kivett (Kansas State) to try for second but he would be called out securing the win for Elmira.
