Recap - Pilots Send Pioneers Packing, 5-3

The Newark Pilots (10-7) extend their win streak to three as they defeat the Elmira Pioneers (6-12) by the score of 5-3 at Colburn Park on Tuesday night.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pilots took control as they rallied to take a 4-1 lead. With one out in the inning and bases loaded, Austin Logan (UC Davis) flied out to right field allowing Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College) to score on the sacrifice. With two outs and bases loaded, Tyler McDonald (Millersville University) singled to right field allowing Cash Barker (Texas A&M Kingsville) to score. Joe Landi later drove in McDonald and Josh Perez (Mississippi College) on single to right field.

Steve Patterson (San Joaquin Delta) carried Elmira offensively, as he displayed his power throughout the night. In the top of the fourth inning, he blasted a solo homer over the right field wall. In the top of the eighth inning, the shortstop hit another homer over the same wall. His second homer, a two-run blast, allowed Kyle Coronel (Binghamton) to score, cutting the Pilots’ lead 5-3.

Elmira fought back to make things interesting in the top of the ninth as they were able to load the bases against closer Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta). With two outs, Scott was able to earn his second save of the season as he was able to make Coronel ground out for the 5-3 putout.

Phillip Flach (Samford University) earned his second win of the season, totaling his record to 2-2. In his seven innings of work, the righty gave up only one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking four. Langston, Landi, and McDonald combined for six of Newark’s 10 hits and driving in four.

Justin Bhatti (Norfolk State) took the mound for the Pioneers in a losing effort. He pitched five and two-thirds innings, while giving up four unearned runs on seven hits. The righty struck out a game high nine batters while walking three. The left handed hitting Patterson lead the way for Elmira, going 2-for-4 with both hits being home runs and driving in all three runs for his team.

The Pilots will travel to Damaschke Field to play the Oneonta Outlaws at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Elmira will be home against the Watertown Wizards at Dunn Field at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
