Recap - Pioneers fall short in 12-inning affair

Elmira, NY The Elmira Pioneers fought back late from a one run deficit to tie the Albany Dutchmen but fell short of their first victory Wednesday in extra innings. The Dutchmen would use a six run twelfth inning to seal the victory against the Pioneers 11-5. The extra inning affair is the longest of the season so far for Elmira and lasted just over four and a half hours.

Dylan Waugh (Arizona Christian) took to the mound Wednesday in his first official start of 2012. The lefty would surrender a solo homerun in the top of the first inning to Joe Mestas (Buffalo) but the offense would answer back in the home half of the inning plating three runs of their own.

With Elmira leading 3-1, Albany would start the comeback by scoring three runs in the fifth inning thus giving them a 4-3 lead. The inning would be highlighted by a two out RBI single from Dutchmen Catcher Ryan Gasporra (Centenary).

The bottom half of the Elmira lineup would tie the game up in the eighth inning on a RBI single from Kendall Konopka (Arizona Christian) scoring Aaron Nardone (Delaware St.) from third after a Gasporra error allowed him to reach third. Albany would gain and hold the lead for good in the twelfth inning off a pinch hit two RBI single from Sam Few (Samford) making it 7-5.

Miles Canady (Loras) took the loss for Elmira as he falls to 0-2 on the season and the Pioneers move to 0-6. Elmira will hit the field again on Friday as they will travel to Amsterdam to take on the Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park for the first time this season.
