Georgia Southern University freshman Chase Griffin, a current member of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s Glens Falls Golden Eagles, has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCWBA) and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America teams. Griffin was one of 32 NCAA Division I players named to the NCBWA Freshman All-America team which was released on Monday. He was chosen to the NCBWA Freshman All-America first team.

The current backstop for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles was the unanimous choice as the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches and media. The Leesburg, Ga., native batted .320 with 10 home runs, 10 doubles and 42 RBI over 55 games. He led the Eagles in home runs as a freshman and finished among the NCAA Division I national freshman leaders in home runs. Grffin was the first Georgia Southern rookie since 1996 to reach double figures in home runs.

Nine of Griffin’s 10 home runs came over the course of a 20-game stretch between Mar. 17 and Apr. 15. The streak began with a three-run home run against UNC-Greensboro and ended with his 10th home run of the season versus conference foe Appalachian State. Included in the home run barrage were a three-run blast against UNC-Greensboro (Mar. 17), a grand slam as part of a two-home run game at Jacksonville (Mar. 20) and a two-run smash at in-state rival and ACC member Georgia Tech (Mar. 28).

Griffin is the first Georgia Southern player to earn Freshman All-America status since current Toronto sixth-round draft pick and former Glens Falls Golden Eagle Eric Phillips in 2009. Coincidentally enough, Phillips, like Griffin, was tapped as a Freshman All-American in the same season that he played for the Green and Gold.

Through four games in Glens Falls, Griffin is batting .533 (8-for-15) with one home run, two RBI and six runs scored. He hit his first home run of the summer against the Watertown Wizards on June 7 in a game which featured five total home runs between the Golden Eagles and the Wizards.
