Since their inception in 2009, the Dutchmen have always tried to assemble a roster that successfully mixes both proven collegiate performers and young talent with incredible potential. This year, more than any other, the Dutchmen have been able to pull together a crop of tremendously talented underclassmen, from contending programs, with bright futures in baseball.
As the Dutchmen's only previously drafted player, College of Charleston freshman Morgan Phillips has unquestionable potential. A former 2010 Perfect Game All-American, Phillips was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 17th round this past year. A shortstop in High School at Frederick Douglass Academy in the Bronx, NY, Phillips has been moved to 3B/OF by the Cougars coaches as he red-shirts in 2012. Possessing incredible speed and a quick bat, the Dutchmen anticipate Phillips contributing in a multitude of ways throughout the summer.
Joining him in Albany will be his college teammate, Taylor Alvarez. A Chapin, South Carolina native, Alvarez was named to both All-Region and All-State teams, as well as being selected as one of the top 20 prospects in the state, after his senior year. He compiled a 2.91 ERA in 2010 and a 2.33 ERA in 2011 and came to College of Charleston with a serious pedigree. On a team with a deep staff, Alvarez has been given a red-shirt year, but with a low 90s fastball and serious command, it's only a matter of time before he breaks out.
Last among the Dutchmen players from perennial powerhouses, the team found a potential CF in Clemson's Mike Triller. The Rutland, Vermont native was selected team MVP and named to the Vermont North-South All-Star Game after hitting .528 during his senior year. A stellar defensive outfielder, Triller won the Omaha Challenge competition among fielders in the fall of 2011. Already one of the better outfielders on the Tigers team, Triller will red-shirt for the top 20 program and could earn a starting spot in 2013.
With tremendous talent and a year of work at major collegiate programs, these three players will look to make an immediate impact for the Dutchmen come June.
