The New York Yankees recalled former Elmira Pioneers all-star pitcher Cody Eppley (Elmira 2006) on Thurs., Apr., 19 from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Just one day later, Eppley was on the mound at Fenway Park, pitching for the Yankees against the Boston Red Sox on a day in which the Red Sox celebrated the 100th anniversary of their home grounds.

The right-handed reliever started the bottom of the ninth inning with New York ahead 6-2. Eppley faced just one batter, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and then gave way to Yankee closer Mariano Rivera.

The following afternoon, Eppley took the Fenway mound in front of a world-wide audience on FOX’s Major League Baseball Game of the Week. The 26-year-old pitched one scoreless inning as the Yankees wrapped up a wild 15-9 comeback victory over the Red Sox.

Eppley replaced Boone Logan with one out and David Ortiz on first in the bottom of the ninth inning. The first batter he faced, Nick Punto, lined out into an unassisted double play which was turned by Mark Teixeira at first base. Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled up the middle with two outs and advanced to second. Eppley then struck out Cody Ross looking to end the near four-hour Fenway marathon.

The Saturday afternoon game that melted into early evening saw the Yankees rally back from a 9-0 deficit through five innings and score 15-unanswered runs.

Eppley, from Dillsburg, Pa., was electric in five appearances at the Triple-A level this season after being picked up by the Yankees. Through five appearances, he did not allow an earned run, converted one save and struck out nine batters in 6.1 innings.

Cody made his Major League debut one year ago, Apr. 23, 2011, as a member of the Texas Rangers.
