Amsterdam's Hyatt Top K-Man in Eastern League

During the summer of 2006, University of Alabama fireballer Austin Hyatt led the Amsterdam Mohawks with 41 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched. It’s now five years later and Hyatt is still piling up the strikeouts. The former Tribe tosser, now a member of the Reading Phillies, led the Double-A Eastern League this season with 12 victories and 171 strikeouts.  Hyatt’s 171 punch outs were the most among all Double-A pitchers while his 12 wins tied for the third-most for pitchers in the Eastern, Southern and Texas Leagues.

The Marietta, Ga., native, a 2009 Phillies' 15th-round draft pick, just completed his third year of professional baseball and second full season. Hyatt set career highs in almost every pitching category including wins (12), appearances (28), starts (28), innings pitched (154.1) and strikeouts (171). He finished the regular season with a 12-6 record and a 3.85 earned run average. The Reading Phillies chose Hyatt as their Pepsi Pitcher of the Year and he also participated in the Eastern League All-Star Game.

The 23-year-old made one postseason start against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the Eastern League semifinals. Hyatt threw a three-hitter over seven innings, allowed one run and struck out nine in a 1-0 defeat.

Although brief, Hyatt’s professional career has included numerous accolades including a 2010 Florida State League Pitcher of the Year Award and selections to All-Star Games in the New York-Penn League, Florida State League and Eastern League.
