Playoff Seeds Decided, Tuesday's First-Round Matchups Annouced

With the 2017 regular season now in the rearview mirror and all of the playoff seeds determined, Tuesday, August 1, marks the beginning of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) playoffs.

The league’s top eight teams advanced to the postseason, four from the West Division – Jamestown (34-15), Geneva (29-21), Elmira (27-23) and Onondaga (23-26) – and four more from the East – Amsterdam (36-12), Albany (33-16), Mohawk Valley (29-18) and Saugerties (20-28).

The No. 2 seeds on both sides were claimed on the final day of the regular season. Albany headed to Little Falls, N.Y., for a doubleheader against Mohawk Valley, needing at least one victory to clinch the second seed in the East. The Dutchmen walked away victorious in both bouts, winning 18-3 in a resumed contest from July 26 and 10-4 in the regularly-scheduled nightcap.

In the West, an Elmira win over Geneva at McDonough Park in the regular-season finale would have allowed the Pioneers leapfrog the Red Wings and earn the No. 2 seed. However, the G-Wings battled back from an 8-3 deficit by scoring five runs in regulation and walking-off in the bottom of the 10th in thrilling fashion to retain the rights to a first-round home playoff game.

Now that the dust has settled, here’s a look at the first-round matchups:

East Division
No. 4 Saugerties (20-28) at No. 1 Amsterdam (36-12) – 6:35 p.m.
No. 3 Mohawk Valley (29-18) at No. 2 Albany (33-16) – 5:50 p.m.

West Division
No. 4 Onondaga (23-26) at No. 1 Jamestown (34-15) – 7:05 p.m.
No. 3 Elmira (27-23) at No. 2 Geneva (29-21) – 7:05 p.m.

Fans interested in purchasing tickets for one of Tuesday night’s playoff games should contact the front office of the host team for more information.

The winners of Tuesday night’s opening-round contests will advance to their respective Division Championship Series, which will be a best-of-three series hosted by the highest remaining seed. The Division Championship Series is slated for Wednesday, August 2, through Friday, August 5. The PGCBL Championship Series is tentatively scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 6; however, should both the East and West Division Championship Series end in a two-game sweep, the start date may be moved up to Saturday, August 5.

More information about the Division Championship Series, including host sites and game times, will be announced in following the conclusion of Tuesday’s games.
