Pios Outslug Dragons, 13-6

ELMIRA, N.Y. – A day after being shutout by the Jamestown Jammers, the Elmira Pioneers' (23-20) offense exploded for 13 runs, as they bested the visiting Glens Falls Dragons (15-28) by a final of 13-6 at Dunn Field Sunday evening.

Glens Falls jumped out to an early lead, when Ryan Beamish (Lee) singled home a run to open the scoring. A wild pitch later in the inning would allow Anthony Vaglica (LIU Post) to score and put the Dragons up by two.

The Dragon’s lead would not last long as the Pioneers responded with three runs in the home half of the first. Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) doubled home two runs to tie the game and would then come around to score on an error by the catcher Vaglica to put the Pioneers ahead by one run.

The game would stay 3-2 until the fifth inning when Glens Falls would strike to take the lead. A bases loaded walk to Matt Hamel (Siena) would tie the score and a Vaglica single to left would give the Dragons the lead. A sacrifice fly from Beamish would then push the lead to two, before a passed ball allowed the dragons to take a three run lead.

But again, the Pioneers would answer back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Troy Dixon (Samford) singled through the hole on the right side which plated two runs and brought the Pioneers to within one. After a wild pitch put Dixon at second, Dixon stole third base and the ball caromed off the third baseman covering the bag allowing Dixon to come home to score the tying run.

In the sixth inning, the Pioneers would take the lead thanks to some clutch two-out hitting. With the bases loaded, Conor Grammes (Xavier) roped a base hit to left center which scored two and gave the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish. A subsequent error by the third baseman on a ball hit by Ayrton Schafer (Samford) would allow another run to score.

Elmira would add two more runs in the seventh inning thanks to two more RBIs from Gilbert, this time a two-run single pushing the lead to five.

The Pioneers would add two more runs on for good measure in the eighth. A wild pitch would allow Schafer to score and a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded from Colton Evans (UC-Davis) would bring home the Pioneers thirteenth run of the game.

Bryce Zaparzynski (Mansfield) picks up the win for the Pioneers out of the bullpen. Bryce three an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief en route to the victory.

Chris Paiva (Eckard) is dealt the loss after being charged for three runs, two earned, in just two-thirds of an inning pitched while walking three.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow, Monday, July 24th, at Utica to take on the Blue Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
