Trail Blazers Knock Off Pios in Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Pioneers (16-15) brief two game winning streak was snapped by the Adirondack Trail Blazers (10-17) on Saturday evening as the Trail Blazers beat up on the Pioneers by a final score of 11-6.

Elmira got on the board first when in the bottom of the first inning, Troy Dixon (Samford) lofted a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to score Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) for the opening salvo.

That lead would be short lived however, as the Trail Blazers scored nine runs in the second frame off of Pioneers starter Jackson Tedder (Virginia). The first two runs came home to score when Jordan Torrento (Adrian) hooked a ball down the right field line for a two run double. Steffen Torgersen (Dartmouth) then slapped a ball the other way for a run scoring hit bringing home the third run of the inning. Riley Schafer (Texas Lutheran) proceeded to line a single up the middle for a two run single, bringing in runs number four and five of the inning. John Boswell (Furman) brought home the sixth run of the frame with an RBI single of his own. Matt Codispotti (Albany) put the finishing touches on the nine run outburst when he drilled a double off the left field wall that brought three runs home to score.

The Pioneers would respond with one run in the bottom half thanks to a Devon Adams (Old Dominion) RBI single.

In the fifth, Elmira would add another single run when a Torrento error at shortstop allowed Colton Evans to score from second base.

Adirondack would get that run back plus one in the top of the sixth. Joe Simone (Rider) joined in on the hit parade with an RBI single before being brought home on Shaeffer’s second RBI hit of the game.

One of those runs would be given right back to Elmira in the bottom of the inning. After doubling to lead off the frame Brayden Combs (Kentucky) scored on an RBI groundout from Adams.

The Pioneers would tack on two runs in the ninth thanks to a Boswell error at first, but the comeback attempt fell short as Logan Walters (Tennessee Tech) pitched the final three innings to get the save.

Jackson Tedder is dealt the loss after giving up nine runs, eight earned, in two innings on six hits.

Jake Walker (Rhode Island) stays perfect on the season as he picks up win number four of the season. He throws six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits while punching out four.

The Pioneers will be on the road tomorrow, July 9th, at Newark to take on the Newark Pilots at 5:05.
