GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (18-7) swept a doubleheader from the Glens Falls Dragons (9-19) by scores of 6-3 and 2-1 on Friday night at East Field.
Game one of the doubleheader between Glens Falls and Mohawk Valley ended in extra innings Friday night, with a score of 6-3 in favor of the DiamondDawgs.
The Dragons got on the board first after an RBI from Mark Powell (St. Rose) allowed Brian Uliana (Rider) to score.
The visitors responded early in the second, after one runner scored and the subsequent throw to third base sailed over the hands of Matt Hamel (Siena), allowing another DiamondDawg to cross the plate and making the score 2-1 Mohawk Valley.
Late in the third, the Dragons evened the score with an RBI single from Uliana to bring in Hamel. The Diamond Dawgs reclaimed their lead early in the sixth after an RBI from Austin Pollack (Hofstra) brought the score to 3-2 Mohawk Valley. Late in the sixth, the Dragons responded and tied the game yet again, with a single from Miles Moore (Bucknell) to bring in Uliana and even the score at 3-3.
Early in the ninth, Glens Falls introduced Ty Phelps (Gannon) to replace starting pitcher James Varela (LIU Post). Mohawk Valley followed the trend, calling Clay Chatham (Dartmouth) to the mound to replace starter Joe DeSarro (Southern NH).
DiamondDawg Clay Koniencki (Monmouth) ended the scoring drought after a single that allowed Alexis Monge-Rodriguez (Barry) and Tim Zeng (Fairfield) to cross the plate, allowing Mohawk Valley to take the lead with a score of 5-3. Moments later, Ben Porter (Columbia) singled to bring in another runner, increasing their lead to 6-3. The inning, as well as the game, ended at that score.
The winning pitcher was Clay Chatham and James Varela took the loss.
The Glens Falls Dragons dropped game two of the doubleheader Friday night, falling to Mohawk Valley with a score of 2-1.
The Dragons pioneered the night’s scoring with a single from Brian Wasilewski (Buffalo) to bring in Brandon Torres (Oneonta) and make the score 1-0 Glens Falls at the end of two innings.
The Diamond Dawgs responded and took the lead early in the fourth after a double allowed Bronson Grubbs (Sacramento St.) to cross the plate. The next play, Alexis Monge-Rodriguez (Barry) singled to bring in another runner and make the score 2-1 Mohawk Valley.
Glens Falls replaced starting pitcher Brandon Budlong (Johnson & Wales) with Tom Taplin (Buffalo), and the Diamond Dawgs introduced Levi Abrahamson (Treasure Valley CC) in place of Jack Fossand (Dartmouth).
No runs were scored after the fourth, and the game ended 2-1 Diamond Dawgs.
The winning pitcher was Jack Fossand, and Brandon Budlong took the loss.
The Dragons return to East Field on Monday night, where they are set to take on the Saugerties Stallions. First pitch is at 7PM.
