Geneva Uses Late-Inning Fireworks to Beat Newark 7-4

NEWARK, N.Y. – After falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings, the Geneva Red Wings (17-10) scored runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to come from behind and defeat the Newark Pilots 7-4 on the Fourth of July.

The loss drops the Pilots to 7-22, while the Red Wings improve to 17-10. Geneva's Justin Barr (Central Alabama CC) picks up the win in relief and Colby Mullins (Andrew) picks up his fifth save, while Newark's Jake Bernardo (Fordham) takes the loss.

The Pilots got the scoring started with 3 in the bottom of the second.  Jonathan Parker (Jones JC) scored the first run on an error from Geneva’s third basemen Joseph Tassin (Bossier Parish CC).  Will Allocca (Virginia) drove in the next when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Over Torres (Yavapai CC) drove in the third run with an infield single to give the Pilots a 3-0 lead.

Newark would add one in the bottom of the fourth on a run scoring single from Mark McKenna (Canisius) to take a 4-0 lead.

Adam Donovan (DeSales) pitched the first fivs innings scoreless for the Pilots, but in the top of the sixth, allowed the Red Wings to cut the lead in half, 4-2. The runs came on an RBI double from Dominic Toso (Bucknell) and a bases loaded hit by pitch to Langston Livingston (St. Joseph’s).

In the top of the seventh, Donovan was pulled for Bernardo.  Bernardo walked the first batter he faced, then got the next two out on groundouts.  An error from the third baseman Zach Santoro (Notre Dame College) extended the inning.  After a walk to load the bases, Bernardo was pulled for Ryan Allen (Eckerd).  On a 1-2 count, Ben Terwillinger (Maine) lined a pitch off the right field wall to clear the bases, and give Geneva a 5-4 lead.

The Red Wings got two more runs off of Allen in the top of the eighth to take a 7-4 lead.  TJ Byrd (Rend Lake) drove in the sixth run with a double, Yohei Ishiyama (Nihon) capped off the scoring with an RBI single.

The Pilots forced Geneva to bring in Mullins with runners on the corners, two outs, and the tying run coming up to the plate in the eighth.  He threw two pitches, and got Josh Loeffler (UConn) to ground out to first.  In the bottom of the ninth, Parker led off the inning with a hit by pitch and pinch hitter Hunter Wells (Tyler JC) and Christian Orr (Saginaw Valley State) both singled to load up the bases with one out.  McKenna lined a 0-1 pitch into left, and was robbed of an extra base hit by Geneva’s left fielder.  The next batter, Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC), lined an 0-1 pitch into the leaping glove of Geneva’s first basemen to end the Pilots threat, and the game.

Ishiyama went 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk and Tassin went 2-3 with strikeout, a run scored, and 2 walks for Geneva.  McKenna went 2-4 with an RBI, a run, a walk, and a hit by pitch, Allocca went 2-4 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a hit by pitch, and Orr went 3-4 with a walk and a run scored for Newark.

Both teams will square off again tomorrow night in Geneva at 7:05pm.
