DiamondDawgs Sweep Newark in Doubleheader at Colburn Park

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs defeated the Newark Pilots in both games of the doubleheader by scores of 6-5 in game one and 8-3 in the nightcap. With the wins, Mohawk Valley improves to 14-6, and the two losses drop the Pilots to 5-17.

In the first game, Nick Caregnato (NC Central) took the win, Eddie Fournier (Cypress CC) took the loss, and Zach Vennaro (Mounte Olive) picked up the save.  In the second game, Joe DeSarro (So. New Hampshire) earned his fourth win and Chris Vitale (Erie CC) took the loss for Newark.

In game 1, the DiamondDawgs got on the board first with a Clay Koniencki (Monmouth) run scoring single in the top of the first.  The Pilots answered back in the bottom half with a two out, run scoring double from Peter Battaglia (Niagara) to tie it up.

The Pilots would score in three consecutive innings.  In the bottom of the second, Mark McKenna (Canisius) drove in a run with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, and in the bottom of the third, Nick Ely (Notre Dame College) drove one in with a sacrifice fly to go up 3-1.

The top of the fourth started a three inning scoring streak for Mohawk Valley.  In that inning, a run scoring ground out from Joe Engel (Columbia) cut the Pilots lead to 3-2.  In the top of the fifth, the DiamondDawgs tied it up when Zach Santoro (Notre Dame College) made a throwing error to extend the inning.  Tim Zeng (Fairfield) scored the tying run.

Mohawk Valley doubled up their run total in the top of the sixth, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits off Fournier.  The first, a run scoring single from Alexis Monge-Rodriguez (Barry), the second, a run scoring double by Zeng, and the final a run scoring single from Russ Olive (UMass Lowell) to go up 6-3.

The Pilots would get 2 back in the bottom of the sixth, on a McKenna double, and a John Balliet (Orange Coast CC) sacrifice fly, but would not make it any closer from that point on.

Zeng went 2-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, and an RBI for the DiamondDawgs.  Battaglia went 3-3 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and an RBI for the Pilots.

Mohawk Valley scored 3 in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead.  The first came on an Olive two out single to make it 1-0.  The others came on a 2-run home run off the left field scoreboard to make it 3-0.  The Pilots would get 2 back in the bottom of the second, on a Hunter Wells (Tyler JC) two out single with the bases loaded.

In the top of the fourth, the DiamondDawgs extended their lead to 5-2.  The first run came when Vitale tried to field a bunt from the pitcher mound, the throw was air mailed over the head of Battaglia at first.  Dan Deely (Sacramento State) came all the away around to score from first, Engle advanced to third on the error.  The next hitter Bronson Grubbs (Sacramento State) hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Engel.

The Pilots got one back in the bottom half of the fourth, to cut the lead to 5-3.  Josh Loeffler (UConn) led off the frame with a triple, then came around to score on a Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC) sacrifice fly.  That’s as close as the Pilots would get in this one.

In the top of the sixth, Zach Mann (Saginaw Valley State) loaded up the bases with two outs.  Olive came up and hit a bouncer into right to drive in Monge-Rodriguez from third.  Zeng and Austin Pollack (Hofstra) both came around to score when Pilots right fielder Over Torres (Yavapai) miss played the ball for an error, putting the DiamondDawgs up 8-3.

DeSarro went 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs (2 earned), striking out 8 Pilots hitters to improve to 4-0.  Olive and Koniencki both drove in two runs for Mohawk Valley.  Wells led the way with two RBIs for the Pilots.

The Pilots will play a double header with Jamestown at Colburn Park tomorrow night.  Geneva is off.  The DiamondDawgs will play a double header at Glens Falls tomorrow night.
