ELMIRA, N.Y. – Thanks to a strong pitching performance from Grant Donahue (Virginia) and a team wide offensive outburst, the Elmira Pioneers (8-13) beat up on the Oneonta Outlaws (6-15) 12-3 on Tuesday at Dunn Field.
Elmira jumped out to an early lead in the first. After retiring the first two hitters of the inning, Jake Hershman (Wofford) walked Conor Grammes (Xavier) before giving up a double to Allbry Major (Xavier) that scored Grammes with the first run of the game. Major would then come home to score the Pioneers second run when third baseman Aron Fried (Quinnipiac) committed an error on a ball hit by Ayrton Schafer (Samford).
Oneonta would cut into the two run deficit in the fourth. Mike Brown (Dartmouth) lead off the inning with a ground ball to short that was thrown away by shortstop Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) allowing Brown to reach base. After a stolen base and a throwing error from catcher Devon Adams (Old Dominion) allowed Brown to reach third, he was singled home by Ben Rhodes (Siena) to cut the lead to just one for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers would respond immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and two away, Brett Rodriguez blooped a ball into shallow left that plated two runs. Andrew Orzel (Wofford) followed Rodriguez with a two RBI double down the left field line, pushing the lead to five for the Pioneers.
The Outlaws sliced into that five run cushion and were able to trim it to three in the top of the fifth. Ben Rhodes hit his second RBI single of the game and another run would come home to score after an error by third baseman Joe Preziuso (Canisius).
Elmira tacked on another run in the sixth, as Rodriguez picked up his third RBI with a single that scored Devon Adams.
The game would be blown open in the seventh with the Pioneers scoring three more runs. Devon Adams hit a two-run triple down the right field line and he would then come home to on a Preziuso single.
The Pioneers put up two more runs in the eighth for good measure. Ayrton Schafer laced an RBI single to right and Brett Vosik (Kansas) tacked on run number 12 with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Grant Donahue gets the win for the Pioneers, his first of the year. The University of Virginia sophomore tossed five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, and striking out nine. Jake Hershman takes the loss for Oneonta after he allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and three walks in five and one-third innings.
Brett Rodriguez paced the offense for the Pioneers, picking up three hits as well as three RBI.
The Pioneers will be on the road tomorrow, June 27th as well as on June 28th before returning home to face the Newark Pilots on June 30th.
