Elmira Swept By Jamestown in Doubleheader

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Jamestown Jammers (14-4) took both games of a doubleheader against the Elmira Pioneers (6-12) at Dunn Field on Friday by scores of 5-0 and 12-3. The losses extended the Pioneers losing streak to seven games.

In the first game of the doubleheader, it was the Cory Blessing (Ohio) show as he pitched six shutout innings in leading the Jammers to victory.

He was backed offensively by the trio of Ben Brookover (UTSA), Skyler Valentine (UTSA), and Chris Estrada (UTSA). The group went a combined 6 for 11 and scored four runs while also driving in three.

The Jammers got on the board early as a Brookover double was followed by a Valentine double to drive him in. Estrada then capped off the inning with an RBI single that put Jamestown up 2-0 early on.

It was Brookover and Valentine who would do damage again in the third. Following a Brookover two out single, Valentine brought him home with another RBI double, his second of the day, to push the score to 3-0.

In the sixth, Estrada was able to come home to score on a wild pitch, and then Christ Conley (Canisius) brought home the fifth run with an RBI single to left.

Elmira was unable to muster any offense as they were shutout and tallied only three hits. Jake Hamilton (Kentucky) took the loss for the Pioneers after tossing five innings and giving up three runs.

In the second game of the twin bill, a late offensive explosion from the Jammers put the game out of reach as they were able to pull away and emerge victorious by a score of 12-3.

Elmira struck first, when in the second inning with runners at the corners, an errant pickoff attempt from pitcher Chris Vallimont (Mercyhurst) allowed Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) to score from third.

The Jammers answered right back in the top of the third with two runs of their own to take the lead. An Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst) double scored John Conti (CSU-Bakersfield) to tie the ballgame. O’Donnell was then brought around to score when Skyler Valentine singled back through the box to give the Jammers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Pioneers immediately tied the game back up when Marshall Gilbert singled home Troy Dixon (Samford). Blake Shinkle (Kansas) then came home as the go ahead run when as he attempted to steal third, the ball got away from the catcher allowing Shinkle to motor all the way home to score without a play.

The Pioneers lead would be short lived however, as Jamestown put up three more runs in the top of the fourth. A John Conti single scored Colin Stack (UMBC) and then later in the inning Christ Conley laced an RBI single to give the Jammers the lead again. An Alex O’Donnell sacrifice fly to center scored John Conti and would give Jamestown a two run cushion.

Jamestown would blow the doors off of this one in the sixth with a five runs frame. O’Donnell ripped a two runs single to push the score to 7-3, and then a Valentine double scored another run to give the Jammers a five run lead. A Chris Estrada single would bring home yet another run and a wild pitch would plate Valentine capping of a five run sixth inning.

The Jammers tacked on two more runs for good measure in the top of the seventh thanks to a run scoring wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Ben Brookover.

Colin Johnston (Monroe County C.C) picked up the win in relief after pitching 2.2 shutout innings out of the pen. Starter Chris Vallimont (Mercyhurst) did not factor in the decision after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, while punching out six.

Zach Eggers (Old Dominion) picks up his second loss of the year after throwing five innings and giving up five runs, four earned on eight hits and one strikeout.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, June 24th against the Newark Pilots at colburn Park. First pitch is set for 7:05.
