Mohawks Romp Past Dragons, Sweep Doubleheader

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. - The Amsterdam Mohawks swept their way past the Glens Falls Dragons by scores of 13-2 and 5-1 at Shuttleworth Park on Thursday night. In game one, the Mohawks slugged their way to victory, while game two featured the Mohawks taking advantage of miscues for the Dragons.

In the first game, John Valente (St. John’s) led the offense, going 5-for-5 with three singles, two doubles, and three runs. Liam Wilson (Canisius) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a two-run home run, two runs, and five RBIs. Anthony Gonnella (South Florida) also paced the offense with a 2-for-2 performance that included two walks, a double, a grand slam, a run, and six RBIs.

The Mohawks bats went to work early. Valente led off the bottom of the first with a double before scoring on Wilson’s two-out, two-run home run to left field. In the second, the offense continued. After two hit-by-pitches started the inning, the Mohawks loaded the bases on Valente’s single. TJ Collett (Kentucky) drew a walk to make it 3-0 Amsterdam. Wilson followed with a double that drove in two more. Eric Rivera (Florida Atlantic) walked to load the bases and then Gonella crushed a grand slam to right field to make it 9-0.

The Mohawks would add four more runs the rest of the way, while Glens Falls managed to drive in two in the top of the fifth. The Dragons were led by Ryan Beamish (Lee), who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The win on the mound went to Thomas Lane (Boston College), who improved to 3-1 on the season. The loss was charged to James Varela (LIU Post), who dropped to 1-2.

In game two, the Mohawks jumped out to another early lead, but they didn’t record a hit to do it. In the first, Julian Gallup (Niagara) led off with a walk before stealing second and third. After Collett walked, Wilson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rivera lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-0 before two bases-loaded walks put Amsterdam up 3-0.

That score held until the top of the fourth when Glens Falls scratched across a run. Pheonix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire) walked and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher with one out. Two batters later, Brian Uliana (Rider) singled to the second baseman. The throw to first allowed Hernandez to race around and beat a relay home to make it 3-1.

Amsterdam answered in the bottom half when Jake Mueller (Wake Forest) roped a two out double to drive in Gonnella. The Mohawks would add one more in the fifth when Valente, who came on as a pinch runner, scored from first on an Eric Rivera double.

Morgan McSweeney (Wake Forest) picked up his first win on the season after going four innings in which he allowed four hits, an unearned run, walked three, and struck out six. The loss went to Glens Falls starter Ty Phelps (Gannon), who dropped to 0-1. Elliott Anderson (Auburn) picked up his first save of the season.

The Mohawks return home Friday night for another doubleheader when they host the Saugerties Stallions beginning at 5 p.m. Amsterdam will look to keep their five-game winning streak alive. Glens Falls will look to bounce back on Friday when they host the Albany Dutchmen in a doubleheader at East Field beginning at 5 p.m.
