Flames pick up third straight victory in dramatic fashion

ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Onondaga Flames (6-5) picked up their third straight win as they defeated the Utica Blue Sox (3-10) 3-1 on Saturday night at OCC Baseball Complex.

The Flames pulled out a win after Utica loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning.  The rally started with a leadoff single by Devon Garcia (Ohio University) and was followed up by walk from Adam LaRock (University of Iowa).  After a sacrifice bunt moved those two over the Flames decided to intentionally walk Robbie Young (Garden City CC) who had already hit a triple in the game.

Flames Pitcher Ryan Marketell (Monroe CC) was then able to get pinch hitter Cole Pursell (Williamette) to fly out to center field for the second out.  Marketell then got Rob Andreoli (LIU Post) to ground the ball to third to end the game.

Marketell’s late game pitching earned him his first save of the year and gave Onondga a three-game winning streak.

Head coach Ryan Stevens has been impressed with the improvement he’s seen from his pitchers.

“They’re starting to come into getting in a rhythm, also [the team’s] starting to learn to play with each other,” said Stevens.

This chemistry was seen in the second inning when Anthony Scalzo (Gonzaga University) brought home Ricky Sisto (Monroe CC) with a sacrifice fly to start the scoring.

Onondaga added a run in the fourth when Tyler Rourke (Alabama A&M) drove home Kyle Gallagher (Cornell University) with a sac fly of his own.  The Dodge City CC transfer, Rourke, ended the day 1-3 with a double and one RBI.

The Blue Sox cut the lead to one in the top of the eighth inning when Andreoli was driven home on a triple from Taylor Olmstead (Southern New Hampshire University).  The triple was Olmstead’s first of the season and gave him a team high nine RBI on the year.

Wyatt Myers (University of Buffalo) padded the lead bringing home Gallagher in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single.

Chase Hagerty (Southeast Missouri State) earned his second win of the season (2-1).  Hagerty tossed six innings of shutout ball and struck out six.

The losing pitcher was Brendon McNerney (Rensslaer Polytechnic Institute) who drops to 0-2.  McNerney ended the day giving up two earned runs over six and one third innings.

Onondaga will head to Newark (2-9) on Sunday as they try to extend their winning streak.  Utica will head to Geneva (8-2) and get another shot at ending their 10 game losing streak.
