Pioneers win rain shortened game over Adirondack, 6-4

ELMIRA, N.Y. – In a rain shortened affair, the Elmira Pioneers (6-5) took down the Adirondack Trailblazers (4-7) by a final score of 6-4. The game was stopped due to lightning and rain in the bottom half of the 5th inning.

The Pioneers got on the board early with a four spot in the 1st. Making his first start for the Pioneers, Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) laced a two-run double in his first at-bat to open the scoring. Later in the inning, Jonathon Crimmin (Siena) singled home Gilbert to make the score 3-0. An RBI groundout from Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) would score Allbry Major (Xavier) who had singled previously in the inning to give the Pioneers their fourth run of the game.

Adirondack would get one back in the 2nd off of Pios starter Zach Eggers (Old Dominion). With two outs, Steffen Torgensen (Dartmouth) ripped a single to right that plated Bay McIntosh (Florida Tech) for the Trailblazers fist run and made the score 4-1.

Elmira would extend their lead back to four in the 3rd inning however. After doubling and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Allbry Major would come across the plate to score on a Jonathan Crimmin RBI groundout.

The Trailblazers would make things interesting though, by scoring three runs in the top of the 4th and cutting the Pios lead to just one. Steffen Torgensen ripped a triple down the right field line that scored Bay McIntosh and Robert Zuwarski (Hillsdale) and then Torgensen would score later in the inning when Justin Smith (Hofstra) grounded out to short.

The Pioneers would get one of those runs right back in the bottom of the 4th. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Allbry Major lofted a ball deep enough to center that was able to score Conor Grammes (Xavier) from third to make the score 6-4. However, the Pioneers would be unable to push across any more runs in the inning.

Chase Austin (Corning C.C) pitched a scoreless top of the 5th before lightning was spotted and the game was put into a delay. Once the rain moved in and the lightning continued, the game was called off and because four and a half innings had been played, the game was official, giving the Pioneers a 6-4 win.

Zach Eggers picks up the win for the Pios. It is his first win of the season, as he worked four innings allowing four runs. Chase Austin gets the save for his scoreless frame in the 5th.

Kyle Cashman (Pace) is dealt the loss for the Trailblazers. He pitched into the fourth inning without recording an out in that frame, and was charged with six runs, five of them earned.

The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow night, Friday, June 16th, against the Onondaga Flames in Onondaga. The Pioneers will be back at home on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Jamestown Jammers starting at 5:05.
