NEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots (1-7) fell at home to the Elmira Pioneers (5-4) 11-2 to run their losing streak up to 7 games.
The Pioneers scored 7 runs off of Pilots starting pitcher Adam Klos (Viterbo University), and 4 runs off of the Pilots bullpen. Houston Roth picked up his first win of the summer tossing 5 innings, giving up just 2 walks, 2 hits, and an unearned run while striking out 2.
The Pioneers scored early and often, scoring 7 runs in the first three innings to knock Klos out of the game. Anthony Nucerino (Connecticut) scored the first run off of a single from Brett Rodriguez (Wofford). Newark got a run back to tie it up in the bottom of the first when Tyler Odekirk (Irvine Valley CC) stole home on a double steal.
Elmira batted around and scored 5 runs in the top half of the second. The first 6 hitters reached base in the inning. Allbry Major (Xavier 17-18) scored on a Joseph Preziuso (Canisius) single, Casey Oliver (Louisiana-Monroe) scored on a Andrew Orzel (Wofford) single, Preziuso and Orzel came around to score on a Nucerino double, and the Pioneers rounded out their second inning scoring with a Rodriguez single driving in Nucerino.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 7-1 when Over Torres (Yavapai CC) bobbled a ball in center field to allow Oliver to come around and score. They added two more in the sixth off of reliever John Balliet (Orange Coast CC) on singles by Schafer and Major, and two runs in the eighth on a two out single by Major to go up 11-1.
Newark rounded out the scoring when Jorge Leon (Hendrix College) drove in Tanner Huddleston (Jones County JC) with a single in the bottom half of the eighth.
Nucerino went 3-5 with two runs, two runs batted in, and two stolen bases, Schafer also drove in and scored two. Major went 3-5 with 3 runs batted in and a run for Elmira. Zach Eggers (Old Dominion) and TJ Stuart (Manhattan) both pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Roth and struck out a batter.
Leon reached base all three times up, going 2-2 with a walk and a run batted in for the Pilots. Odekirk went 1-4 with a stolen base and a run and Huddleston went 1-3 with a run scored, he also made an error at third base. Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung University), Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech), and Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC) all pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Pilots are off tomorrow and will face Jamestown on Tuesday night at 7:05.
The Pioneers host Onondaga on Tuesday night at 7:05.
