Mohawk Valley Sets Attendance Record in Victory vs. Oneonta

LITTLE FALLS, NY – The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs set a record on Friday night in attendance, bringing 2,632 fans to Veteran's Memorial Park. They sent them all home happy, as Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY/Southern New Hampshire University) pitched another gem to earn his second win of the young 2017 season, a 12-5 victory over the winless Oneonta Outlaws.

The Outlaws got on the board first just four batters into the game, as a fielders choice from Ben Rhodes (Amsterdam, NY/Siena) would score another Ben: Ben Dubas (Mechanicsburg, PA/Alvernia). However, that would be all that Mohawk Valley starter Joe DeSarro would give up, as the next Oneonta batter would fly out to end the top of the inning.

Tim Zeng (Lumberton, NJ/Fairfield) would make Oneonta starter Danny Hobbs (Wilton, NY/Siena) pay for a second-and-third jam in the second with a bloop single that would score leadoff hitter Clay Koniencki (Schwenksville, PA/Monmouth). The second half of that jam, Russ Olive (Chelmsford, MA) got home just one batter later, on a lazy fly ball by Joe Engel (Downers Grove, IL/Columbia) that dropped just in front of the Oneonta center fielder.

Mohawk Valley would extend the lead to two in the very next inning, as a bases loaded walk issued to Dan Deely would score Austin Pollack. However, Hobbs would get out of the bases-loaded jam with a ground-out to end the third inning.

Hobbs would allow the first two Diamond Dawgs to reach base again in the fourth, and the first of those would come home on just one pitch into the third at-bat. A wild pitch by Hobbs would allow Engel to score from second, where he reached on a towering double to left-center field. A hot grounder by Zack Coker (Tuscaloosa, AL/Alabama) would allow the second of those two, Ben Porter (Newton, MA/Columbia), to score. That would be all for Hobbs, as he would be replaced by Matt Ellmyer (Greenville, SC/Wofford) after allowing three straight hits before his first out in the fourth. Between the third and fourth innings, Mohawk Valley would send 14 batters to face both Hobbs and Ellmyer.

Zeng would make matters worse for the Oneonta reliever in the fifth, as his two-run blast over the right-center field fence would score himself and Deely. Another run would come in just two batters later off the bat of Coker, as another ball would squirt into left field, scoring Engel. Matt Smith (Placerville, CA/Sacramento State) would rocket a ball into left field as well, scoring Porter and Coker. A sacrifice fly by Koniencki would score Smith just two batters later. In all, Ellmyer would face 10 Diamond Dawgs before the inning mercifully ended for him.

Aron Fried (Ossining, NY/Quinnipiac) would bring the Outlaws back in the eighth, albeit slightly, as his RBI single to right field would score Stone Pelligrino (Spartanburg Methodist) and Mike Brown (Pflugerville, TX/Darmouth). However, Johnny Mayer's bloop single would give Mohawk Valley the run right back, scoring Anthony Boselli (Ventnor City, NJ/Mercer County CC).

The Outlaws would get two more off of closer Johann Doerrer (Dolgeville, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) as a single by Brown would bring home Pelligrino and a balk would bring home Ben Dubas.

Relievers Crandall Poore (Gray, GA/Middle Georgia State), Clay Chatham (Newport Beach, CA/Dartmouth) and Doerrer would pitch just as admirably as DeSarro did, only allowing the three runs the rest of the way to put the Outlaws away.

DeSarro would get the win for Mohawk Valley (4-1), his second of the season. Hobbs would be saddled with the loss for Oneonta (0-6).

Mohawk Valley will have a home and home series with the Glens Falls Dragons, starting at East Field on Saturday. Oneonta will head back to Damaschke Field to host an interleague matchup with the Jamestown Jammers.
