Early Elmira Surge Too Much for Dutchmen to Conquer

The Albany Dutchmen (15-18) were defeated by the Elmira Pioneers (16-18) at Bob Bellizzi Field on Wednesday night by a score of 14-7. The Elmira bats had the Dutchmen playing catch-up through the night as they strung together 12 runs and 16 hits in the first four innings of the contest.  Albany fought until the end with seven unanswered runs in the last three innings.

Two fielding errors came back to haunt the Dutchmen in the first as Elmira put together five runs in the inning. Zac Bellinger (Thomas A. Edison High School) hit a bases clearing three-run triple to highlight the early Pioneer scoring.

Dutchmen starter Damon Valloreo (Burlington County CC) was greeted with more strong Elmira bats in the third and fourth inning as the Pioneers blew the game open scoring seven runs over the two frames. Elmira shortstop Ty Yesensky (Old Dominion) brought in three of those runs over the two-inning span with a fielder’s choice RBI in the third and two-run double in the fourth.

After two more runs by Elmira in the top of the seventh, the Dutchmen showed some fight scoring five of their own in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Turgeon (Central Connecticut) lined a two-run double to left center to bring the Elmira lead to 14-2 and Paul Bello (Georgetown) hit a triple later in the inning to drive in two more Albany runs. The Dutchmen added a sixth run in the eighth inning as Will Remillard (Temple) hit an RBI single. Andrew Deeds (Morehead State) brought the score to 14-7 in the ninth with an RBI single.

Despite the loss, Remillard lead all Dutchmen hitters going 4-4 with an RBI. Ryan Normoyle (Washington, MD) went 4-6 with three RBIs for Elmira. Valloreo (2-1) was tagged with the loss for Albany and Jordan Carter (4-2) recorded the win. The Pioneer starter went seven innings allowing seven hits and five runs while fanning three on his way to victory.

The Dutchmen will look to take revenge on the road against the Pioneers tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For all Dutchmen information visit www.dutchmenbaseball.com or follow us @DutchmenPGCBL.
