Jammers Walk Off in 10th to Beat Saugerties, 5-4

The Jamestown Jammers won their 2017 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) season opener in thrilling fashion, as they walked off with hit in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-4 victory.

Jammers starter Bradley Griggs (UTSA) got into some trouble in the top of the third by walking the first three batters of the inning, as the Stallions scored two runs, including an RBI single by Matt Forlow (Manhattan).

In the third and fourth innings the Jammers had their chances to cut into the Stallions’ 2-0 lead by loading the bases in both innings, but were unable to capitalize.

The Stallions held that early 2-0 lead until the bottom of the 7th when Alex O’Donnell (Mercyhurst) and Ben Brookover (UTSA) started the inning off with back to back hits. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and a Christ Conley (Canisius) ground out brought in a run to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Jammers weren’t done, as Chris Estrada (UTSA) followed with a base hit to tie the game. Connor Rule (Kansas State) had an RBI double and Nick Bernick (Niagara) added another hit to put the Jammers up 4-2.

In the top of the ninth the Stallions got the lead off runner on and into scoring position, as Nick Campana (Hartford) had an RBI single to cut the lead to one run. The Stallions were down to their final out, but Connor Moroder (Illinois State) came through with a clutch hit to tie the game up at 4-4.

Neither team threatened until the bottom of the 10th, when Jammers leadoff hitter Skyler Valentine (UTSA) got the inning started with a base hit. O’Donnell and Brookover were issused back-to-back walks to load the bases for Conley. On a 2-0 count with one out, Conley smacked the walk off hit into right field to win the game 5-4 and to give the Jammers their first win of the 2017 season.

Jamestown starter Griggs went 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with four strikeouts. Earning the win in relief was Casey Vincent (St. Bonaventure). Stallions starting pitcher Nick Alvarado (Illinois State) went 2.2 innings without allowing a run, giving up two hits and striking out three. Matt Jones (Manhattan) threw 3.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout in a losing effort.
