Phillies Call Up Former Mohawk Mark Leiter Jr.

Former Amsterdam Mohawk Mark Leiter Jr. earns major league promotion.

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Phillies called up former Amsterdam Mohawk pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. to the major leagues from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. He joins the Phillies, who are in New York to take on the Mets, as a bullpen option after Howie Kendrick was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

Leiter is the son of Mark Leiter Sr., a veteran of 11 seasons in the majors who played for the Phillies in 1997 and 1998. The pair would become just the second father-son duo to ever play for the Phillies, joining Ruben Amaro Sr. (1960-65) and Ruben Amaro Jr. (1992-93, 1996-98). His uncle, Al Leiter, was a two-time All-Star and pitched in 19 seasons in the pros from 1987 to 2005.

In two appearances and 5.1 innings out of the bullpen so far this season for Lehigh Valley, Leiter recorded 11 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.69. The right-handed hurler owns a career ERA of 3.37 in 95 games – 69 starts – in the minors after being selected in the 22nd round of the 2013 draft out of New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native played for the Mohawks in 2011 and 2012. In his first season with Amsterdam, Leiter made 10 starts, tossed 54.0 innings, and struck out a league-high 74. The following summer, he fanned 32 batters in 29.0 innings while registering a minute 1.55 ERA. He garnered All-PGCBL honors in both of his seasons in Carpet City, and was inducted in the Amsterdam Mohawks Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2013.
