Beauchaine Pitches Pilots Past Pioneers

The Newark Pilots (18-14) defeated the Elmira Pioneers (15-17) by a final score of 2-1 behind Carson Beauchaine's (Saginaw Valley State) eight-inning gem on the mound.

Beauchaine did not allow a run and surrendered only two hits through eight full innings of work. He fanned 11 Pioneers, including three of the first four he faced to start the game. The right-hander issued his only walk of the game in the third to Ty Yesensky (Old Dominion).

Newark's leading hitter Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) started off the second with a double down the left field line.

Although not usually know for his base running, Villa got a big jump off second and stole third in the next at bat. He came around to score the first run of the game on a RBI single from Jacob Starnes (UT Dallas).

Both starting pitchers went to work from there. Beauchaine went 1-2-3 through the Elmira side in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Cody Lillich (Niagara) held the Pilots to their lone tally until the seventh.

After walking Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara), Lillich was relieved by Jimmy Reed (Skagit Valley). A RBI single from Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge) against Reed allowed Swenson to make it home safely for the two-run advantage.

Down 2-0 in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers put a runner in scoring position with no outs. B.J. Willis (Wabash Valley C.C.) struck out swinging, but reached first on a passed ball. With Willis on third, David Bishop (Mississippi State) lifted a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring Willis. Newark closer Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) forced Justin Lacy (Longwood) to groundout for the final out, earning his seventh save of the season.

Beauchaine is now 2-1 and has collected 51 total strikeouts. Starnes went 3-for-3 with a RBI. Michael Bolling (Lewis) also had three hits for the Pilots.

Lillich is tagged with both runs in six and two-third innings pitched. He struck out four and walked two. Corey Keller (Florida Atlantic) and Lacy each had a hit for the Pioneers.

Tomorrow is the 2011 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game. Both the Newark Pilots and the Elmira Pioneers will represent the West Division. The game will be held at 7:05 p.m. at Dunn Field in Elmira.
