Q&A with President Jeff Kunion

PC: Corey Mansfield/Brokenbatblog.com (@Broken_Bat_Blog)

We had a chance to sit down with the President of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League at the league's annual All-Star Game at Bob Bellizzi Field last week. Here's what he had to say.

Question: How would you rate this year's quality of play?

Jeff Kunion: This year we had 40 PGCBL alumni drafted by MLB.  What struck me was the number of draft picks in the first 10 rounds.  We had more selections (13) in the first 10 rounds this year than the last three combined.  We had two in the first round alone.  This year's All-Star Game has a lot of future pro players in it.

Question: Does the league anticipate future expansion?

Kunion: We have had multiple requests to join the league.  We hope to add as many as three more franchises to the PGCBL within the next couple of years.  When we started the league six years ago we only had eight teams.  Growth has been quick as the league has built an outstanding reputation for its work on and off the field.

Question: What role does Perfect Game play in the league?

Kunion: We are very happy to be part of the Perfect Game family.  They provide us with so much inside scouting information about the players who we recruit. They continue to open doors for our teams throughout the collegiate baseball world. The PGCBL also gets great exposure on the PG website with articles and postings distributed to thousands of PG members.

Question: With only a few weeks left in the season, what are you looking forward to the rest of the summer?

Kunion:  I am very excited about the playoffs this year.  We added two teams to the mix, so it should really be a battle.
Every playoff club will have a winning record.  Should make for some very exciting baseball.

Question: At the All-Star Game MVP ceremony you mentioned that more than half of the past PGCBL All-Stars have gone on to play pro ball.  How was this year's group of prospects?

Kunion:  There were some very special athletes at the game this year.  Lots of MLB scouts on hand to witness the game but, also watch an impressive display of power during our HR Derby.  The All Star Game is a real showcase event.  And, many of our prospects participate in the game.  Many are eventually drafted.
