Dutchmen Win Streak Snapped At Five After Nine-Run Inning by Hawkeyes

The Albany Dutchmen (13-15) hit the road against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes (15-12) and were defeated 15-4 on Thursday night.  The Hawkeyes third inning rally proved to be too much for the Dutchmen who went into the game with a five game winning steak.

The game was an even battle through the top of third. Dutchmen left fielder Nikko Echevarria (Nova Southeastern) doubled, stole third and was driven-in by Andrew Deeds (Morehead State) to cut the Hawkeyes lead in half at 2-1.

The contest was blown open after a nine-run bottom of the third by Cooperstown. The Hawkeyes had four hits in the inning and capitalized off two Dutchmen errors. Alex Meadow (Wesleyan) capped off the Cooperstown rally with a three-run double to put his team ahead 11-1.

The Dutchmen tried to claw their way back in the eighth inning scoring three runs in the frame. Garren Palmer (Georgia Southern) crushed his second home run of the season to bring home two.

Chris Kono (3-0) (Holy Cross) led the way for Cooperstown going 7.2 innings on four runs (two earned), nine hits and striking out three. Tanner Barron (Trinity) (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Albany. The Dutchmen starter went 3.2 innings allowing four hits on six runs, only two earned, and striking out three.

Despite the loss, Echevarria continued to look strong at the plate and on the base paths. The utility player, who transitions between the outfield and middle infield, went 2-4 with two runs and swiping his seventh bag of the season. It was his fourth stolen base in the past two games.

The Dutchmen will take on the Watertown Wizards at Bob Bellizzi Field tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. For all Dutchmen information visit www.dutchmenbaseball.com or follow us @DutchmenPGCBL.
