Outlaws Edge Dragons 4-3

The Glens Falls Dragons returned to East Field Wednesday night, trying to end a two game losing streak. It wasn't to be however as the Oneonta Outlaws came to town and edged the Dragons 4-3.

Glens Falls jumped out early on Oneonta starter Justin Higginbothom (Wofford). Robbie Knightes (St. Johns) got things started for the Dragons with a one out single. 2015 PGCBL All-Star Ryan Hooper (Cal-Davis) made his East Field season debut a successful one has he doubled down the left field line to put runners on second third. Griffin Neuer (Bellarmine) then delivered a two-run single up the middle to plate Knightes and Hooper to give Glens Falls a 2-0 lead.

The Outlaws would draw even in the top of the third with a two out rally. Chandler Engel (Wofford) singled off of Glens Falls starter Drue Brooks (Felician). Nick Pope (Eastern Kentucky) would draw a walk to put runners on first and second. Quin Cotton (Grand Canyon) and Carter Austin (UMASS) then hit back to back RBI singles to even things up at 2-2.

Glens Falls regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Josh Brown (Skidmore) and Neuer (Bellarmine) led off the frame with back to back base hits. After a failed suicide squeeze attempt retired Brown and Alex Chandler (St. Rose) walked, Dave Hoffman (Siena) sliced a single down the right field line to score Neuer to give the Dragons the 3-2 lead.

Oneonta took the lead for the first time on the night in the top of the fifth when Alex Malsch (Wofford) and Taylor Maxey (Chattanooga CC) hit RBI singles to make it 4-3 Outlaws.

In the bottom of the eighth Knightes led off with his third hit on the evening for Glens Falls. Hooper followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Oneonta reliever Yale Hughes (West Liberty) came in and closed the door to keep his team up by a run.

In the bottom of the ninth Hoffman walked and pinch hitter Brian Granton (Colby CC) singled to put runners at the corners for Glens Falls with one out. After Outlaw's pitcher Caleb Armour (Southwest Tennessee CC) struck out Drew Greenwood, Knightes was intentionally walked to load the bases. Armour then got Hooper to pop up to center field to end the threat and the ballgame.

Knightes was 3 for 4 for Glens Falls. Hooper had two doubles and Neuer added a pair of singles. Neuer had a pair of RBIs and Hoffman drove in a run.

Cotton and Austin each were 2 for 5 for the Outlaws.

Higginbothom (3-0) earned the win on the mound. He gave up just six hits, while striking out two and walking three. Brooks (0-3) pitched well in the loss. He went eight innings, scattering seven hits, striking out five and walking five.

Oneonta is now 7-4 on the season. Glens Falls falls to 2-9.

The Dragons are back at home Friday night against the Albany Dutchmen. The first pitch at East Field is scheduled.
