Elmira Pioneers Win Opening Night Under Record Setting Crowd

It was an exciting night here at Dunn Field. The parking lot was jam packed with excited fans waiting to witness the Elmira Pioneers for their first home game of the season.

Troy Dixon got things started at the very first pitch. A bunt single a few feet into the grass allowed Dixon to reach first. From there, the Pioneers capitalized on fielding miscues and shaky pitching to bring in some runs in the 1st inning. After Kyle Ruth reached on an error, Rob Perteet would double to left center to allow Ruth to score. After a walk, a dropped ball from the right fielder and an RBI walk by Phil Madonna, third baseman Joe Preziuso would hit a single to right field and bring in two runs.

First baseman Grey Finwood would single in another run in 3rd inning and would allow Ty Denzer to score. The score after the 3rd would be 6-0. After that, the Pioneers would never relinquish their lead. Two runs in the 5th inning and three runs in the 6th would extend the Pioneers lead 11-1. In the 8th inning, the Jamestown Jammers would rally back with 5 runs to cut the score to 11-6 but the Pioneers would answer with five runs of their own to bring the score 16-6 in favor of the Pioneers.

The winning pitcher of the evening was Taylor Ahearn who pitched six full innings, gave up four hits, walked two, allowed one earned run and struck out one batter.

The losing pitcher would be Steve Simmons of the Jammers who lasted 2/3 of the first inning and allowed five runs.

The Pioneers would win the game under a record setting crowd of 5,107 and with a fireworks show during the game.
