Newark's Martin named 23rd-best prospect in PGCBL

Vinny Martin (PC: Paul Dewa/Newark Pilots)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Iona College rising junior and 2015 Newark Pilots closer Vinny Martin was included on the list of the top prospects in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL), released Thursday by Perfect Game.

Martin, the only Pilot named to the 25-man list, came in at No. 23.

The hard-throwing righty was among the best relievers in the PGCBL in 2015. In 20.2 innings out of the bullpen, Martin recorded a 0.87 ERA – third lowest among pitchers who made at least 15 appearances – with 20 strikeouts and a mere three walks (two of the three walks were intentional). He didn’t allow any earned runs in 17 of his 18 appearances and his six saves were one shy of the league lead.

Originally from Yonkers, N.Y., Martin fanned the side while earning his first save in the season-opening victory at Saugerties on June 3. His 2.2 innings and four strikeouts from June 11 against Adirondack both marked season highs. On June 23, he earned his only win with 2.0 innings of hitless ball against Elmira. Martin pieced together an impressive streak of 17.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run to begin the season.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound hurler is the latest in the line of successful Newark closers that includes Mark Scott (2011-12/San Joaquin Delta), Donald Frew (2013/Young Harris) and Travis Laitar (2014/Cortland). Like his predecessors, Martin was selected to the PGCBL All-Star Game, one of six Pilots to receive the honor in 2015.
