Riders Win Their First Ever Playoff Game

The Riders got on the board early in this one, scoring in the bottom of the very first inning.  Tommy Wagner (Cornell University) led off the inning with a single up the middle.  After a Dale Wickham (Cornell) walk, Mark Cardinalli (UC Davis) grounded to the shortstop who threw to the second baseman.  He then threw to first, trying to complete the double play, but the throw was wild and allowed Wagner to come around to score.

Victor scored again in the 3rd when Wickham reached on a walk and Cardinalli hit a ground rule double into the left center field gap.  Matt Fallon (Xavier University) walked and Mike Meyers (RIT) hit an infield single which scored Wickham before a walk to Chris Lehane (Jacksonville University) brought in Cardinalli for the second run of the inning.

Utica would get one back in the top of the 4th when a leadoff walk came all the way around to score after a wild pitch and a single brought him in.

Victor would retake their 3 run lead, and then add to it in the bottom of the inning.  Matt Brooks (MCC) led off with a single before Dale Wickham tripled him in on a ball that was nearly caught by a diving center fielder.  Two batters later, a wild pitch allowed Wickham to come in, making the score 5-1 RailRiders.

Victor blew the game wide open in the bottom of the 5th as they scored 6 runs on just 2 hits.  There were also 2 hit by pitches, a walk, and 2 errors during the inning.

Utica would go on to score twice in the 6th, and once in the 7th and 8th while Victor also scored once in the 7th and 8thto make the score 13-5.

Every RailRider hitter had at least one hit in the game while Wagner, Brooks, Fallon, and Lehane had 2 hits apiece.  Wickham added 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.

Luke Tomczyk (MCC) earned his 4th win of the summer, pitching 7 innings of 4 hit baseball while striking out 7.

The RailRiders will play in Elmira tomorrow night in game one of the Western Division Finals.  Game 2 of the 3 game series will be played in Victor on Sunday, with the start time yet to be announced.
