Brewers win streak snapped at home

UTICA, NY – Scoring their most runs at home since the opener at Donovan Stadium, the Utica Brewers were unable to increase their win streak to three games on Monday (6/22), falling to the Adirondack Trial Blazers 10-9.

Utica’s (8-10) bats pounded out 12 hits, most of them coming in the second, third and sixth inning which caused three lead changes in the ball game. The first lead changed occurred after the Brewers scored six runs in the first three innings, five of them coming in the third on four hits and two walks. Freshman Taylor Olmstead (University of Connecticut) hit his second home run in as many days to lead off the inning, then Tadarious Hawkins (Henderson State), Vincent Capone (Concordia College) and Kyle Schade (St. Andrews University) loaded the bases via one hit, a walk and hit by pitch. Scoring them on a single to left field was Ryan Cox (Kutztown University), driving in his sixth RBI of the season to that point. Two batters later Dan Vucovich (Holy Cross) drove in his fifth run of the season on a sacrifice to center to score Cox, making it 6-1.

Utica only scored three runs from there in the final six innings, losing the lead in the top of the sixth after the Trail Blazers scored seven unanswered runs. They did however fight back in the bottom of that very same inning, getting a big two out hit from Capone after Olmstead scored McClennan after he reach base via an error to make it 8-7. Capone took the second pitch of the at-bat to left field, scoring Vucovich and Olmstead to reclaim the lead 9-8. Capone finished with two runs batted in on 1-for-4 at the plate.

Unable to hold the lead for the comeback was relief pitcher Alec Morrison (Holy Cross). The sophomore allowed two hits in his appearance, but five errors and a wild pitch conceded the runs Adirondack needed for the west coast victory.

Getting the win for the Trail Blazers was Joe King and the save was Tom Fazzini.

Utica’s next game is against Mohawk Valley tomorrow (6/23). Each team has won on the other’s home field in the last two match ups. Game time on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
