Dutchmen See Big Lead Disappear, Drop Doubleheader

The Albany Dutchmen (4-9) were hit with a pair of losses after playing the Watertown Wizards (6-8) on Wednesday evening. Albany squared off twice with Watertown after their field, Duffy Fairgrounds, was deemed unplayable for Monday's game. Both games were shortened to seven innings to help reduce time.

Albany’s bats came alive early after a five-run first inning in game one. Ryan Van Amburgh (Pepperdine) highlighted the rally hitting an RBI triple and eventually scoring a run. The Dutchmen strung together four hits in the inning, bringing all nine batters to the plate. Anthony Turgeon (Central Connecticut State), Andrew Deeds (Morehead State) and Garren Palmer (Georgia Southern) also had RBI’s in the inning.

The Dutchmen would unfortunately see six unanswered runs, four in the last inning by the Wizards. Kody O'Connor of Le Moyne had a two-run double to start Watertown's seventh inning rally. Larry Balkwill of Siena drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and Brandon Cippola won the game with a sacrifice fly. Dutchmen starter Steven Poche (SE Louisiana) worked into the seventh inning but was tagged with a no decision. The Albany starter had four strikeouts on seven hits.

The second game unfolded much differently than the drama-filled first game.

After drawing first blood in the fourth, once again off the bat of Van Amburgh, Watertown responded big in the bottom of the inning. The Wizards put together seven runs to erase the 1-0 deficit and tag Justin Brantley (Siena) with his second loss of the season. Aaron Page (Minnesota State) went the distance in the 9-3 win. Cippola had a two-run single to highlight the rally by the Wizards. Despite the loss, Dain McNabb (Middle Tennessee State) strung together two hits and a run.

The Dutchmen will be on the road against Cooperstown on Thursday and Mohawk Valley on Friday before playing a doubleheader on Saturday against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles inside Bellizzi Field starting at 5 p.m. For all Dutchmen information visit www.dutchmenbaseball.com or follow us @DutchmenPGCBL.
