Pilots fall to Elmira, 3-1

Filed by the Newark Pilots:

Newark- A few rain drops were felt around the start of the first pitch at Colburn Park but the clouds moved on and it was dry evening for baseball as the Newark Pilots squared off with the Elmira Pioneers for the twelfth time this season. Newark sent their ace Jayson Yano (Stevens) to the mound looking to set a Pilots single season record for wins in a season with seven.

The start of the game was all about Yano and Elmira starter Jeremy Soule (Fairfield) as they cruised through the line up for five innings putting zeros on the scoreboard.

Pioneers’ offense was able to strike first in the top of the sixth inning. It was the top of the Elmira order that got to Yano with three straight hits to lead off the frame. Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) doubled to right field and was followed by a Chris Kalousidian infield single that put runners on the corners for Zac Bellinger (Saint Rose). Bellinger singled to center that brought Sinnen home and a throwing error by Luis Silverio (Palm Beach CC) allowed Kalousidian to score. Joey Guaragna (Old Dominion) added a two out RBI double and the Pioneers led 3-0.

Pilots threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Newark loaded the bases with no outs when Logan Boyher (Columbia) was hit by a pitch, Braxton Wilks (Kansas St.) singled and Tommy Wagner (Cornell) walked. Tanner Giesel (Southeastern CC) singled to left to score Boyher but Guaragna was able to gun down Wilks trying to go home.

Yano went all nine innings in the loss and will have to wait till his next start in his quest for that seventh win of the season. Soule picked up the victory in Elmira’s 3-1 win over the Pilots.

Newark falls to 25-19 while Elmira improves to 24-19 and now trails by just a half game behind the Pilots for the top seed in the West division.
