Pioneers Walk-off 6-5 Against Adirondack

FIled by the Elmira Pioneers:

Elmira, NY – Jason Patnick (Manhattan) picked the perfect time to register his only hit on the night as it came with the bases loaded and Elmira trailing Adirondack 5-4. Patnick would send the Dunn Field faithful home happy as the Pioneers (22-17) walked-off for the first time this season earning the 6-5 victory. With the win Elmira takes sole possession of 2nd place in the west after Newark swept a double-header against Watertown.

The Pioneers sent one of their most effective pitchers this season in Bryson Hough (Bucknell) to the mound Wednesday night against the Trail Blazers. Hough made his eighth start of the season sporting a 0.78 ERA along with a 5-0 record. The Pioneers offense would spot Hough an early lead to work with scoring three times in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Zac Bellinger (Saint Rose) kicked off the inning with a single up the middle for his first hit of the game. After stealing second base, Bellinger would score on an RBI double from Nick Walker (Old Dominion) to make it a 1-0 game. Derek Deler would give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead two batters later as his single scored Walker from third base. A wild pitch combined with a balk allowed Deler to reach third base as he would score on an RBI single from Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.

The middle innings would see the Trail Blazers offense come to life as they started to rally against Hough in the top of the 5th inning. Hough would see his string of 20.2 innings of scoreless baseball come to an end as RJ Devish (Rutgers) drove in Alex Simone (La Roche) to make it a 3-1 game. Adirondack would pull within a run as Greg Wasikowski (Bucknell) scored on an error from Hough.

Trailing 5-3 entering the 9th inning, the Pioneers had their sights set on making a comeback in front of their hometown fans. Elmira would use three pitchers in total on the night as Hough went five innings allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits as well as four strikeouts. Jeremy Soule (Fairfield) worked the 7th and 8th innings yielding a single run on two base hits. Matt Horton (Cornell) energized the Pioneers offense working a 1-2-3 top of the 9th inning.

Taylor Skerpon (Penn State) got the call to pinch hit for Elmira and would work a walk to kick off the bottom of the 9th inning. Hillson would make it a one run game with his second RBI hit of the night scoring Skerpon from third base. With the bases loaded after a single to right field from Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan), Patnick would deliver his first and only hit of the night against Adirondack reliever Woody Bryson (Villanova). With the outfield playing deeper than normal, Patnick blooped a ball into shallow left field to score TJ Dixon (Samford) and Hillson to complete the 6-5 comeback victory.

The Pioneers will look to make it four wins in a row tomorrow night as the Amsterdam Mohawks come into town. Elmira will close out their three game home-stand with a HUGE postgame fireworks display courtesy of Chemung County. It will also be C-Tran Passenger Appreciation Night at Dunn Field. Elmira will try for the sweep of the Mohawks during the regular season as the two teams are not scheduled to play one another again before playoffs. Fans can be a part of the fun and excitement taking place at Dunn Field by visiting the front office to purchase tickets. For more information call the Pioneers at 607-734-2690.
