Elmira wins rubber match against Newark, 12-8

Filed by the Newark Pilots:
Newark- It was a rubber match of all rubber matches bewteen the Pilots and Pioneers from Colburn Park. Sunday capped off a weekend series between the two teams that was split heading into the night. To top that off, it was the eleventh time the teams met on the season, with each team winning five games. Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) took the mound for Newark against Taylor Aheran for Elimira (Siena)
The Pilots got on the board first when Derek Reed (Saint Reed) lofted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Tanner Giesel (Southeastern CC) in the second inning.

The score was tied going into the bottom of the third when Ahearn issued lead off walks to Dorian Hairston (Kentucky) and Luis Silverio (Palm Beach CC) that brought Tim Lewis (Maryland) to the plate. Lewis took Ahearn’s 2-0 fastball and put it over the right center fence to give Newark a 4-1 lead on Lewis’ second home run of the season.

Both teams tacked on two runs in the sixth before things got out of hand in the top of the seventh. What seemed like a harmless half inning spun out of control in a hurry and the Pilots lost their three run lead.

With two outs in the top of the seventh the Pioneers had seven consecutive batters reach safely verse three different Pilot pitchers. Joey Guaragna (Old Dominion) and Derek Deleer (Florida International) both had two run doubles in the frame as Elmira scored six times when all was said and done and took their first lead of the contest at 9-6.

Elmira added to more two more runs in the eight inning and another in the ninth as they cruised to 12-8 victory over Newark.

The Pilots drop to 21-16 on the summer as they remain tied for lead atop their division. Newark will take on Glens Falls tomorrow night at Colburn Park, first pitch 7:05.
