Rams' pitching stymies Adirondack in 1-0 win

WATERTOWN, NY- The Watertown Rams (21-14) took over sole possession of first place in the West Division with a 1-0 win over the Adirondack Trail Blazers (14-23). Mitch Sewald (LSU) picked up the win for the Rams and Jabin Weaver (East Stroudsburg) took the loss for Adirondack.

The Rams scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Robbie Alessandrine (Monmouth) walked with one out, stole second base, and came around to score on a Nick Moore (Missouri) RBI single. Moore lined a one-hopper off of Adirondack third baseman RJ Devish (Rutgers) and the ball went between the pitcher’s mound and second base. By the time Trail Blazer second baseman Alex Lushkevich (Albany) was able to recover the ball and throw home, Alessandrine had crossed safely.

The story of the game was the pitching, particularly from the Rams. Starter Mitch Sewald tossed eight scoreless innings in picking up the win. The right-hander had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings and finished with eight strikeouts while allowing only two hits. Sewald is now 3-4 on the season with a 2.87 ERA. Rams closer Jon Escobar (Holy Cross) notched his eighth save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Weaver went three innings and allowed the lone run on two hits while striking out five in picking up the win. Adirondack relievers Tsuyoshi Horibata (Binghamton) and Woody Bryson (Villanova) threw five innings of scoreless relief, while allowing only two hits.

Nick Moore was the only player in the game to tally multiple hits, going 2-for-3 to raise his batting average to .278 on the season.

Prior to the game, Elise Stefanik, Republican candidate for the 21st congressional district, threw out the first pitch.

The Rams and Trail Blazers meet again at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
