To recap last night’s action:
Mohawk Valley at Utica Postponed
The Utica/Mohawk Valley game scheduled for last night will be made up on July 16 in Utica as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Amsterdam 12 Glens Falls 6
The Amsterdam Mohawks are now tied for first place in the East Division after beating the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, 12-6, at Shuttleworth Park. The Mohawks have now won 14 of 15 games while Glens Falls has dropped 6 of 7.
After a scoreless first inning, the Mohawks got the scoring started with a three-run second inning. Blake Logan and Marcus Carson brought home runs with RBI singles and a third came around on a Jonathan Pryor RBI groundout. JQ Folena provided the answer in the top of the third for Glens Falls, hitting a 2-RBI single to right field with two outs to make it 3-2 Amsterdam. The Mohawks put up four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to extend their lead. JaVon Shelby and Joe Purritano provided RBI doubles and a Brendan Tracy RBI single, plus two bases loaded walks and a wild pitch plated the other runs.
Amsterdam scored two more runs in the sixth to wrap up its scoring. Alex DeBellis hit an RBI double to left field and Jonathan Pryor singled in another run. Glens Falls scored two in the top of the seventh on a groundout and an error, but the combination of those two runs and lone runs in the eighth and ninth weren’t enough, as they fell, 12-6.
Joe Randall tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory for the Mohawks. The game was delayed due to lightning and rain and Mohawk starter Kevin Guthrie did not return to the mound following the delay. Chas Lacko allowed seven earned runs in 2.2 innings to take the loss for Glens Falls.
Watertown 5 Adirondack 4
The Watertown Rams won their fourth consecutive game on Tuesday, beating the Adirondack Trail Blazers, 5-4, in walk-off fashion. With the win, the Rams still sit a game and a half up in the West Division. Adirondack had won 5 of 6 before the loss.
In the bottom of the ninth, Santino Alteri drew a one-out walk, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout. With two away, Matt Diorio hit the first pitch he saw up the middle for a base hit, scoring Alteri and giving the host Rams their third walk-off win of the season.
Adirondack got the scoring started on a Dan Cecillia 2-RBI single to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Watertown answered on a Joe Deluca sacrifice fly and a James Bonds RBI triple. The Trail Blazers added a run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Down by one in the seventh with two outs and runners at second and third, Matt Diorio hit a pop fly to shallow left-center field. Miscommunication let the ball drop and allowed the two runners to score, giving Watertown a 4-3 lead. Adirondack tied it in the top of the eighth on an Alex Lushkevich RBI groundout.
Starters Sean Rackoski and Tsuyoshi Horibata each went six innings for Watertown and Adirondack, respectively. Rackoski allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out six, while Horibata allowed four runs (all earned) in their no-decisions. Jon Escobar struck out the side in the top of the ninth to get the win for the Rams, while Pat Geraghty took the loss for Adirondack.
Newark 6 Albany 1
For the first time in PGCBL history, a pitcher has thrown a complete game in three consecutive starts. Jayson Yano went the distance again on Tuesday night, as the Newark Pilots beat the Albany Dutchmen, 6-1, in Newark.
Yano, whose streak started on June 18 against Glens Falls, allowed six hits on Tuesday and gave up one run in picking up the win. Tuesday’s complete game was his first nine-inning complete game of the streak. June 18’s was seven innings and June 23’s was six innings. On the other side, Drew Tolson allowed five runs in six innings to take the loss for Albany.
Newark scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jack Gerstenmaier, Brandon Wilkes and Tanner Giesel each had RBI singles in the inning. The Pilots added two more in the fifth on a Giesel RBI triple and a Zach Padgett RBI single. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth made it 6-1 Pilots, what wound up being the final score.
Now let’s preview tonight’s games:
Watertown at Glens Falls DH: 5:00 p.m.
The West Division-leading Watertown Rams will travel to East Field in Glens Falls to take on the Golden Eagles in a double-header. The Rams are coming off a walk-off 5-4 win over Adirondack, while Glens Falls lost on the road to the Amsterdam Mohawks. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Elmira at Utica 7:00 p.m.
It turned out to be an unplanned off night on Tuesday for Utica, as the rain caused their game against Mohawk Valley to be postponed. The Brewers have won just one of their last thirteen, their most recent loss coming at Albany on Monday. Elmira is coming off a rough double-header on Monday in which the Pioneers were swept by the Adirondack Trail Blazers. The two teams meet at Donovan Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Amsterdam at Mohawk Valley 7:05 p.m.
Winner has sole possession of first place. That’s what’s at stake in Little Falls on Wednesday as the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs play host to the Amsterdam Mohawks in a clash between the top two teams in the East. Amsterdam is coming off a 12-6 win over Glens Falls on Tuesday, while Mohawk Valley last played on Sunday, a 17-9 win over Utica. First pitch at Veterans Memorial Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Newark at Adirondack 7:15 p.m.
This past week has shown almost complete opposite outcomes for the Newark Pilots and Adirondack Trail Blazers. Before last night’s 6-1 win over Albany, the Pilots had lost six of their last seven games while Adirondack had won five of their last six before a 5-4 loss to Watertown. The two teams meet in Boonville on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
