First Place Pioneers Ignite for 9 Runs in Big Win Versus Dutchmen

The first place Elmira Pioneers (12-8) delivered a team effort in their victory over the Albany Dutchmen (11-9), combining excellent pitching with a huge performance from their offense.

The game was a pitchers' duel in the first three innings as Bryson Hough (Bucknell) faced the minimum nine batters in the first three innings and the Pioneers' only run came when Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) scored on a Spencer Hotaling wild pitch. In the bottom of the fourth inning, however, the Pioneers offense delivered one of its most impressive innings of the season.

Before the frame was through, the Pioneers had sent 13 men to the plate and received several key hits. The scoring in the inning began on a Zac Bellinger (St. Rose) single before Taylor HIllson (Mansfield) drove in two more on a two-run base hit. Two batters later, Drew Fisher (USC-Upstate) drove in his third and fourth runs of the season on a two-run double, and then it was Jason Patnick (Manhattan) finishing the frame with a bang. In just his second Pioneers at-bat, Patnick drilled a long home run to left field, just the second home run at Dunn Field this season, to give the Pioneers an 8-0 lead. Bellinger added another RBI single in the sixth inning to give the Pioneers the 9-0 margin by which they won the game.

The Pioneers offense was great, but Bryson Hough (2-0) didn’t need much help. The rising senior right-hander went 6 innings allowing no runs on 4 hits, striking out 4 while walking only 1. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his four starts this season, and lowered his ERA to 1.17 on the season by the time this game was through.  Zach Bican and Tucker Rekucki did not allow a run in the final three innings as the Pioneers finished off a five-hit shutout.

One day after their strong effort on Saturday, the first place Elmira Pioneers are back at Historic Dunn Field on Sunday at 5:05 PM as they host the Watertown Rams. Pioneers fans in attendance will receive cowbells courtesy of Party Time to help them cheer on their hometown team even louder. For tickets, visit the Dunn Field Front Office or call 607-734-2690 for information.
