Rams split double-header against Elmira

WATERTOWN, NY- The Watertown Rams and Elmira Pioneers split a double-header on Friday, Elmira winning the first game, 7-3, and Watertown winning game two, 8-2. Logan Salow (Kentucky) picked up the win in game one for the Pioneers and Dalton D’Spain (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) tossed a complete game to earn the victory in game two.

Game One:

The Elmira Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 7-3, the final score. Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) had the big hit of the inning, a 2-RBI double to center field. The batter before, Nick Walker (Old Dominion) had brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Rams got out to an early 2-0 lead in the game, as Joe Deluca (Niagara County CC) hit a 2-RBI double to left center in the first. The Pioneers answered with three runs in the top of the second inning. TJ Dixon (Samford) had a sacrifice fly and Santisteban again had the big hit in the inning, a two run single through the right side to give Elmira a 3-2 lead. Santisteban had another RBI single in the top of the fourth and Watertown Rams shortstop Robbie Alessandrine had a sacrifice fly.

Santisteban finished 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs for the Pioneers. He was the only player in the game to have multiple hits. Logan Salow allowed three runs (all earned) in five innings of work to pick up the win. Javi Villanueva (Skagit Valley) tossed five innings, allowing four runs (one earned) and took his first loss of the season.

Game Two:

It was a much different story for the Watertown Rams in game two. After struggling offensively in game one, the Rams scored eight runs, as they went on to defeat Elmira, 8-2. The home team struck first in the first, as James Bonds (San Diego) scored on a throwing error by the Elmira catcher.

It was all zeros until Derek Deler (FIU) doubled home two runs in the fourth to give the Pilots a 2-1 lead. The Rams took a 3-2 lead in the home half of the inning as Ben Wylly (San Diego) scored on a wild pitch and Charles Leblanc (Pitt-2014) hit a sacrifice fly.

The big inning for the Rams came in the fifth when Willi Martin (Mount Olive) and Jason Scholl (Eastern Illinois) hit back-to-back home runs with one out. After Wylly was hit by a pitch and Josh Hassell (Holy Cross) singled and pulled off a double steal, Dustin Exford (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M) hit a 2-RBI double down the left field line. He came around to score on a Leblanc RBI single.

Reigning PGCBL Pitcher of the Week Dalton D’Spain tossed his second consecutive complete game, throwing all seven innings, allowing the two runs on five hits and striking out five Pioneer hitters. Roberto Suppa (Cornell) took his first loss of the season, going 3.1 innings and allowing three runs (two earned).

Watertown is back at the Fairgrounds on Saturday night as they play host to the East Division-leading Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Elmira will play the Albany Dutchmen on Saturday at Dunn Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
