Pioneers add Gunn to pitching staff

Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers have added the services of another right handed pitcher for the upcoming 2014 season. Virginia State University sophomore Colton Gunn will add to the already promising arms that fans will see this summer at Dunn Field. The Trojans compete in the 12 team Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Gunn, a native of Dinwiddie, VA is a Criminal Justice major off of the baseball diamond and is listed at 6’3” 190 lbs. Gunn finished his freshman season for the Trojans making 12 starts, going 6-7 through 71.1 innings pitched. He put together 6 complete games compiling a 4.67 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 20 walks. Opposing hitters were only able to take Gunn out of the park on one occasion during the 2013 season.

Pioneers Manager Matt Burch said of adding Gunn to the rotation, “We are really excited about having Colton in our rotation this summer. He is a righty that will excel on the mound and he adds a toughness that we are looking forward to.” The Trojans are coached by Merrill Morgan, who became the head coach in 2004. Morgan graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986 and played for the Rams batting .308 in 1985. Both Morgan and Burch continue to develop future stars on and off of the field after finishing their academic and athletic careers at VCU.

The Pioneers home opener is set for Friday, June 6th vs the Amsterdam Mohawks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and there will be plenty of entertainment for fans including post game FIREWORKS!!
