Pioneers hold the lead for victory

The Pioneers coming off a win took the field Wednesday night against the Amsterdam Mohawks trying to sweep their short 2 game series. Elmira would be unable to score after stranding numerous base runners through the first three innings against Amsterdam starter Mark Leiter Jr. (NJIT) but would break through in the fourth as Aaron Hopper (Marietta) lined a double to bring in Lacy for a run. Hopper would then score on two wild pitches.

The Pioneers would build their lead in the fifth when Geoff Jimenez (Florida Atlantic) singled and Ryan Normolye (Washington) knocked a double to bring in Jimenez for a 3-0 lead. Justin Lacy (Longwood) singled to bring home Normoyle tacking on another run. In the seventh inning the Pioneers would add another run when Corey Keller (Florida Atlantic) slammed a homerun to centerfield.

The Pioneers picked up what would be a valuable insurance run in the ninth inning. The inning started with a walk to Hopper. David Bishop (Mississippi State) pinch ran and stole second. Sal Pezzino (High Point) singled to bring in Bishop.

The Pioneers received a strong effort on the mound from Jordan Carter (St. Joseph’s) who pitched seven scoreless innings. The Mohawks rallied for 4 runs in the eighth and placed the trying run on base. But Pioneers closer Wes McBride (UNC-Greensboro) enticed Zach Shank(Marist) to hit into a game ending double play.

After an off day the Pioneers will return to Dunn Field to take on the Watertown Wizards for a two game series Friday and Saturday. Both Friday and Saturday will feature the “Lucky Fan” giveaway, which includes an HD TV, a DVD player, gift certificates and more.
