By: John McGraw
Amsterdam's John Nogowski (Florida State), the 2013 PGCBL Player of the Year

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce that John Nogowski (Florida State) of the Amsterdam Mohawks has been chosen as the 2013 PGCBL Player of the Year.

Nogowski, a rising junior at Florida State, led the league with a .497 on-base percentage and he finished among the PGCBL’s top five in six other offensive categories including batting average (.365), slugging percentage (.534), .total bases (79), walks (29), doubles (14) and hit-by-pitch (10). He was second among qualifying PGCBL hitters in slugging percentage and third in both batting average and walks. Nogowski’s .497 on-base percentage tied a league record that was set last summer by 2012 PGCBL Player of the Year Ross Kivett (Kansas State).

The Tallahassee, Fla., native topped the two-time league champion Mohawks in six different offensive categories. He compiled 54 hits, scored 33 runs, drove in 24 runs and belted three home runs through 44 regular season games. The Amsterdam first baseman paced all Mohawk swingers with 17 multi-hit performances.

He reached base safely via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 39 of 43 games played in which he recorded at least one plate appearance. Nogowski logged at least one hit in 33 games and walked at least once in 21 contests. The Florida State product both walked and recorded at least one hit in 17 games. Nogowski, a late arrival due to the Seminoles’ participation in the NCAA Super Regionals, opened his summer by reaching base safely via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 17-straight games. The on-base streak included a 10-game hit streak in which Nogowski batted .439 (18-for-41) with two home runs and 11 RBI. Nogowski finished the regular season with an 11-game on-base streak, which coincided with Amsterdam ending the regular season on an 11-game unbeaten streak.

The 20-year-old struck out just 12 times in 187 regular season plate appearances for an average of one strikeout every 15.6 plate appearances.

Nogowski started 39 games for the Mohawks at first base and helped the team to a 26-13 record in those contests.

Defensively, Nogowski was one of the top first basemen in the PGCBL. He started 39 games at first base for Amsterdam finished third in the league in total chances (372) and putouts (332). Nogowski collected 37 assists and committed just three errors for a .992 fielding percentage.
