WATERTOWN- Watertown (29-19) scored nine runs en route to an 9-1 victory over visiting Utica (16-28) on the final night of the 2013 PGCBL regular season. Anthony Magovney (Buffalo) picked up the win for the Rams. Hunter McIntosh (Alabama State) took the loss for the Brewers.
With the win, the Rams set a new franchise record for wins in a single season. The Rams finished the regular season 16-7 at home and 13-12 away from the Duffy Dome to finish with a 29-19 overall record.
Watertown took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first to begin the scoring. Jacob Boylan (Kansas) drew a one out walk and advanced to third on a single by Tyler Decker (JCC/Adelphi). With two outs, Collin Theroux (Nevada) uncorked a 3-run home run to give the home team a 3-0 lead. The home run was Theroux’s third of the season and second at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. The Rams added a run in the bottom of the third on a Tyler Decker RBI single which scored Joe Moroney (Kansas).
Utica got a run back in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-1. Joe Gallub (Concordia) doubled with two outs and was driven in on a single by Spencer Mumford (South Florida State). Watertown answered with three runs in the home half of the inning to push its lead to six. Collin Theroux singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a Riley Smith (Occidental) fielder’s choice. With one out, Nik Alfonso (South Florida) grounded out to third base which scored Bryce Greager (Chandler-Gilbert/Nevada) who had walked previously in the inning. Jacob Boylan delivered a two-out RBI double down the left field line to score Riley Smith and conclude the scoring in the inning.
The Rams added a run in the sixth on a Tyler Decker double over left fielder Spencer Mumford’s (South Florida State) head. Decker’s double scored Cameron Allen (St. John Fisher) from first. In the bottom of the eighth, Jacob Boylan delivered his second RBI double of the game, scoring Cameron Allen. For Boylan, the two doubles are his third and fourth on the season.
Rams starter Anthony Magovney tossed six innings and allowed one run (earned) to earn the victory for the Rams (4-3). Magovney finished with seven strikeouts while only allowing four hits. The trio of Josh Amann (JCC/St. John Fisher), Logan Grant (Creighton/Millersville), and Ryan Smith (St. John Fisher) tossed three scoreless innings of relief to secure the win. Brewers starter Hunter McIntosh (3-5) worked three innings and yielded four runs on four hits while striking out one in his loss.
Tyler Decker finished 4-for-5 with 2-RBIs and a double for Watertown. Jacob Boylan and Collin Theroux both tallied multiple hits for coach Paul Alteri. Joe Moroney contributed a 1-for-2 night with a walk and run scored for Watertown.
Joe Gallub was the lone Brewer to tally multiple hits going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The 2013 PGCBL playoffs are set. In the West, Newark and Elmira will play a single game on Thursday to decide who advances to the West division championship series and face the Watertown Rams. Newark will host the game following a 6-1 win over Mohawk Valley and a 4-3 Elmira loss to Adirondack. In the East, Albany/Glens Falls and Mohawk Valley will play a single game on Thursday to decide who advances to the East division championship series and face the Amsterdam Mohawks. At time of posting, the two teams were tied at five in the bottom of the eleventh. If Glens Falls wins, Glens Falls advances to the playoffs. If Albany wins, Albany advances to the playoffs. Albany would claim third place in the East division on a tiebreaker with Glens Falls (both would finish the season 26-22). Mohawk Valley will host the game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Both the division championship series and the PGCBL championship are best-of-three series. The division championship series will begin on August 2nd. The PGCBL championship is scheduled to begin on August 6th.
Following the game, the Watertown Rams announced award winners for the 2013 season. Joe Moroney took home team MVP honors. Moroney finished the regular season with a .308 batting average and at time of posting, led the PGCBL with 41 runs scored. Trevor Marino (VCU) was named Rams' Offensive MVP while Collin Theroux was awarded Defensive MVP. Marino batted .276 during the regular season in 32 games played. As the Rams backstop, Theroux threw out 10 of 26 attempted base stealers. Logan Grant took home Watertown's Pitcher of the Year award. In 19 appearances (all in relief), Grant posted a 1.97 ERA while recording a 4-2 record.
Watertown is off tomorrow as they await the winner of Newark/Elmira in the PGCBL West division championship. The first game of the best-of-three series will be played on Friday night at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. For Utica, they end the season with a 16-28 overall record in their first season in the PGCBL. The Brewers finished fourth in the West division and went .500 at Munane Field.
