Filed by the Utica Brewers...

UTICA, N.Y. - The Utica Brewers fell behind 2-0 in the second, but hammered out nine runs on 13 hits to down visiting Adirondack 9-5 in an important game in the PGCBL West playoff race. The Brewers pulled within a half game of the third place finish needed to advance to playoffs, while the Trailblazers were temporarily dislodged from a third-place tie with division rival Newark.

Adirondack's Bobby Slagle (Villanova) broke an early scoreless tie with a two-run double in the second inning. The Brewer bats responded in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on three hits. Michael Pierson (Appalachian State) and Joe Gallub (Concordia, N.Y.) each smacked RBI singles during the four-run rally. Chase Livingston (Rhode Island) connected on a sacrifice fly and Ryan Valdes (Florida State) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home another run.

Michael Pierson and Jay Gonzalez (Auburn) each added an RBI single in the sixth inning to increase Utica's lead to 6-2.

Adirondack's Dominic Fazio (High Point) jolted the Blazers back to within one in the sixth inning with a three-run home run, his fifth of the season.

The Brewers pulled away in the bottom of the eighth inning with three more runs. Joe Gallub collected his second RBI single of the game and Chase Livingston capped off the scoring with a two-run single.

Utica's Eric Brothers(Sioux Falls) picked up the victory, allowing just two runs in seven innings of work. Adirondack's Keith Ryan(Ave Maria) suffered the loss. He conceded six runs, two earned, on nine hits, walked four and struck out four in 5.1 innings.

Offensively, the Brewers were led by a three-hit performance from Pierson. Pierson reached base safely four times in five plate appearances. He remains the PGCBL's leader in batting average heading into the final week of the regular season. Joe Gallub finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored and Chase Livingston totaled three RBI. Michael Pierson, Jay Gonzalez and Michael McClellan (Georgia Southern) all scored two runs apiece.

Dominic Fazio topped the Trail Blazers with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Brandon Jossey (Seton Hill) and Alex Mata (Saint Leo) each tallied two hits, Mata also scored two runs.

Both teams are off on Wednesday for the PGCBL All-Star Game at Newark's Colburn Park.
