DiamondDawgs squeeze out a win over the Golden Eagles

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs scored twice in the final three innings to squeeze out a 3-1 victory over the Glens Falls Golden Eagles on Monday night at East Field. The Mohawk Valley win, combined with Amsterdam's 13-9 victory over Albany, dropped the Golden Eagles into a second-place tie with the DiamondDawgs in the PGCBL East standings.

A one-out, two-strike safety squeeze bunt by Mohawk Valley's Sam Dexter (Southern Maine) with Casey Rodrigue (LSU Eunice) on third in the seventh inning caught the Golden Eagles off balance. Rodrigue beat a throw to the plate to give Mohawk Valley a 2-1 lead. A two-out bunt by Dexter in the ninth with Rodrigue on third was thrown away which allowed Rodrigue to score wih a key insurance run for the DiamondDawgs.

Mohawk Valley's Gavin Culpepper (Southeastern Louisiana) pitched a four-hitter over seven innings allowed 4 hits. Culpepper allowed one run in the fifth inning on a safety squeeze by Bryan Ramirez (UTPA) of the Golden Eagles. Jared Dye (ULM) pitched two scoreless innings of relief and retired six of the seven batters he faced to earn his first save. 

Casey Rodrigue led Mohawk Valley's offensive efforts. he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jordan Friend (Alabama A&M) also scored one run for the DiamondDawgs on a Trey Hunt (Point Loma Nazarene) on a Trey Hunt double.

Ryan Davis (LeMoyne) of the Golden Eagles spun a three-hitter over six innings and conceded one run in a no decision. Davis’ only charged run came on an RBI double by Trey Hunt that deflected off of first baseman Braxton Martinez’s glove in the fourth inning on what would have been a fantastic defensive play.

Kevin Cowan (William Paterson) took the loss for Glens Falls. He pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits. Matt Eckelman (Saint Louis) worked the ninth and was charged with one unearned run.

Both the DiamondDawgs and the Golden Eagles are off on Tuesday and Wednesday for the 2013 PGCBL All-Star Game. The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, July 25, at East Field with a doubleheader against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes. The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs travel to Newark on Thursday night for a single game against the Pilots.
