Pilots can't overcome errors in loss to Rams

Newark NY, July 10th, 2013 -- The Newark Pilots (11-18) commit two costly errors surrendering the lead and eventual victory to the Rams (16-13) by a final of 4-3.

Watertown went into the ninth inning trailing 3-2 while facing Newark’s hard throwing closer Donald Frew (Young Harris). With one out Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) pinch hit a single to right center. Another single by Trevor Marino (Virginia Commonwealth) placed runners at first and third with two outs. The last single of the inning, by Nik Alfonso (South Florida), tied the game at 3-3.  Marino then stole home on the back end of a double steal to plate the winning run.

Newark pitcher Andrew Sanders (3-1, Ithaca) had another great outing as he allowed no earned-runs and four hits over 7 1/3 innings. This performance is the fourth time Sanders has gone six or more innings this season.

The Pilots scored first in the bottom of the second when Josh Ludwig (Rochester) drove in David Vandercook (Columbia) on a base-hit to right field. Vandercook was walked on base by Watertown pitcher Jake Jenkins (Pacific) before moving to second on a Steve Laurino (Marist) single.

Newark tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Max Rosing (Cortland) had doubled to left and would be brought home on a Vandercook sacrifice fly. Steve Laurino is solely responsible for the second run of the inning as he bombed a solo-homerun over the right field wall.

The first two Watertown runs came off of a Pilot error in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third a ground-ball got past the second basemen allowing the two unearned runs for Andrew Sanders.

Laurino continued to impress as the designated hitter went 3-for-4 with one RBI on the night.

Newark travels to Elmira on Thursday to play the Pioneers for the second time this week. They will face them again at Colburn Park on Friday the 11th. The Rams head to Cooperstown tomorrow to play a double-header against the Hawkeyes, first pitch slated at 3:00 p.m.
